The European Parliament’s Intergroup on Fighting Against Poverty has been renewed! This is more than just good news, it is a critical step towards ensuring that the fight against poverty remains intersectional and at the heart of EU policymaking! Why does this matter? The Intergroup serves as a unique platform that bridges MEPs, civil society organisations, and policy experts. It keeps poverty and social exclusion high on the EU agenda and ensures that voices from the ground are heard at the top. What happens next? With its renewal, the Intergroup will: 📌Push for intersectional solutions to tackle poverty across sectors like housing, health, equality, economic, employment, and climate. 📌 Refocus social rights across key policy areas: anti-discrimination, climate justice, migration, digital rights, housing, and fiscal and tax justice. 📌 Monitor and respond to policy gaps, holding institutions accountable to social rights and justice. 📌 Strengthen partnerships to amplify the impact of anti-poverty measures at both EU and national levels. The stakes couldn’t be higher. As poverty levels in Europe are alarming, especially in the wake of austerity measures, rising living costs, and economic uncertainty, we need bold action and political will. People's Summit Opening Panel: How to connect the EU Anti-Poverty Strategy to the European Pillar of Social Rights and the Housing Plan? 🏠🤝 🎤 This first panel will set the stage for the People's Summit by exploring how the EU Anti-Poverty Strategy can be effectively integrated with the European Pillar of Social Rights and the Housing Plan. The keynote speech will be delivered by Stefan Olsson, Deputy Director General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. Sérgio Aires, former President of EAPN - European Anti Poverty Network and an expert on anti-poverty, will provide an analytical perspective on how to translate policy commitments into effective, sustainable outcomes for Europe’s most vulnerable communities. Barbara Koren is also joining the conversation to share her expertise as a person experiencing poverty, representing Austria, highlighting the systemic barriers that continue to hinder access to social rights. Why this session is critical:  As poverty rates continue to rise across Europe, it is imperative that the EU's strategies are both ambitious and grounded in reality. This panel seeks to foster a dialogue between policymakers, experts, and those with lived experience, ensuring that the EU Anti-Poverty Strategy is truly responsive to the needs of European citizens. Shaping the EU Anti-Poverty Strategy 🌍 We’re kicking off the day with a deep dive into “How to Shape the EU Anti-Poverty Strategy?”, with three dynamic group discussions exploring key aspects of the strategy’s development and the resources needed to bring it to life. 🔹 Group Discussion: Which EU Funding to Eradicate Poverty? Preparing the Next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). This session will focus on the financial backing of the EU Anti-Poverty Strategy, discussing how the European Commission must ensure sufficient resources are allocated to its implementation. The upcoming EU budget beyond 2027 will be pivotal in securing the funding needed to eradicate poverty across Europe. 🎤 Speakers:  Enrico Tormen, Advocacy Adviser, Save the Children International Sarah Chander, Director, Equinox: Racial Justice Initiative They will explore the complexities of effectively combating poverty during a time when priorities are increasingly shifting towards defence and securitisation to the detriment of human rights. 🗣️ Why is the participation of People Experiencing Poverty important in policy design? 🔑 Participation is at the heart of EAPN's vision. No legal, policy, or budget initiative should be made without the involvement of those directly affected by systems of oppression.
