🇬🇧 Yesterday, an intense debate took place in the UK Parliament, highlighting the ongoing tension between individual freedoms and national public health. 🏛️ The focus of the debate was a bill aimed at limiting how vapes and electronic cigarettes are advertised to protect children. However, a more controversial measure was added to this bill: the proposal to ban smoking for anyone born in 2009 or later. 🚭 This proposal raises fundamental questions about individual rights and the government's role in protecting the health of future generations. How far should the government go to protect its citizens, especially the younger ones, from health risks? Statement from New Jersey Health Commissioner Kaitlan Baston: Decades of research has shown that smoking has devastating consequences – both for the smokers and the people around them. It is, of course, definitively in the interest of public health to ban smoking indoors, including in casinos. When the Legislature passed the 2005 New Jersey Smoke-Free Air Act, casino workers were excluded from its protections. Because smoking in casinos is expressly permitted by statute, I do not have the authority to amend or eliminate this statutory provision. Only the Legislature has that power. There are bills currently pending that would ban or seriously limit where smoking can occur inside casinos. Governor Murphy has repeatedly said he’ll sign legislation to ban casino smoking as soon as it hits his desk. As a physician and the Commissioner of the Department of Health, I can say unequivocally that reducing exposure to second-hand smoke is good for the health of all New Jerseyans. To that end, the Department’s Office of Tobacco Control & Prevention continues our work to help New Jerseyans quit smoking and keep from starting in the first place, especially our youth. TLDR? Here it is in haiku form: Smoking is still bad. It takes a bill to fix it. Governor will sign.

Australian teenagers who have vaped are much more likely to then try smoking, new research published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health shows. The study found that the younger a person started using vapes, the higher their increased risk of smoking. "Public health experts have warned that teenage vaping uptake has the potential to undo the positive progress Australia has made in reducing smoking," said study supervisor, Assoc Prof Becky Freeman. "This latest study shows how real that threat is." It’s a sobering reminder of the need for state, territory and federal governments to work together to fully implement and enforce Australia’s new #VapingReforms and protect young people.
