Several goals are under review, arguably some of the most difficult to measure, including Goal 16 – peace, justice and strong institutions and Goal 10 – reduce inequalities. With the past two decades seeing a dramatic increase in the number of conflicts around the world, we have to take a hard look at the progress made towards creating more peaceful and just societies, if we are to meet the 2030 targets.

Alternative ideas to consider

The value of justice is an integral part of peace. When any section of society, whether the powerful or the less powerful, the minority or the majority in communities, feels that their need for justice is unmet, conflict will certainly be triggered, and the fragile fabric of peace will be torn. On this International Day of Peace, the essence of the Rule of Law and equal access to justice for all people, regardless of their power strata, should be at the forefront of all discussions. The absence of justice is tantamount to the absence of peace. #internationalpeaceday!

New Article in The National Newspaper In this article, I delve into the complexities and contradictions that war imposes on liberal values, particularly in Ukraine. War often forces societies to make difficult choices between security and freedoms that are otherwise taken for granted. I explore how, under the strain of conflict, liberties such as freedom of expression and access to information can erode, presenting a challenging paradox: fighting for freedom sometimes demands its own restrictions. The article touches on the impact of war on national identity and civic rights, highlighting how government actions—like media control, language policies, and restrictions on public expression—shape the societal landscape. Reflecting on Scotland, I raise questions about how a society might respond to similar pressures in a time of conflict, asking whether the sacrifice of certain freedoms can be justified in the name of survival and unity. Ultimately, this piece is an exploration of the cost of war on personal and societal freedoms, and how nations must carefully balance resilience with the preservation of their core values.
