Is there a misalignment between EU cohesion policy and the EU’s industrial policy? Professor Vassilis Monastiriotis and Tea Gamtkitsulashvili (Department of Geography and Environment, LSE) show that while the former targets less developed areas of the EU, the latter predominantly aids well-developed regions. 🔗 Read more on the LSE European Politics and Policy #EUROPP blog: https://lnkd.in/gmyDxtsp To stay up to date with the latest stories from the European Institute, visit lse.ac.uk/ei/news.

Is there a misalignment between EU cohesion policy and the EU’s industrial policy? 🇪🇺🏭 Tea Gamtkitsulashvili and Vassilis Monastiriotis (LSE European Institute and Hellenic Observatory) write on LSE European Politics and Policy that while the former targets less developed areas of the EU, the latter aids well-developed regions. They argue for a move towards a more spatially aware, regionally inclusive industrial policy framework that would allow the EU to target areas with untapped growth potential.

Is there a misalignment between EU cohesion policy and the EU’s industrial policy? New research from Tea Gamtkitsulashvili and Vassilis Monastiriotis demonstrates that while cohesion policy targets less developed areas, funds from Horizon and the European Innovation Council flow predominantly to well-developed regions. Developing a “territorialised” industrial policy and a “strategic” cohesion policy could help create a more cohesive and effective framework for EU policy that avoids widening regional inequalities. https://lnkd.in/gmyDxtsp

So great to be part of this timely and highly relevant issue! with my analysis of EU de-risking strategy and the emergency of a new clean energy geopolitical order. #Energy #EnergyTransition #CleanTrade #Partnerships #CleanTech #Geopolitics https://lnkd.in/eB66TSPi
Will geoeconomic transformation reinforce or redefine global power? Politics and Governance's new thematic issue examines the emerging geoeconomic turn in the global political economy, emphasizing the need for empirical analysis to complement existing theory. While these shifts are beginning to materialize, they often replicate existing power structures, prioritizing profit over societal, ecological, and equity concerns. We need systemic thinking to face the challenges of today and tomorrow. This has far-reaching consequences for many domains of public policy, from better regulation to R&I policy, industrial and cohesion policy among others. Emphasizing a holistic perspective and cross-disciplinary collaboration over isolated silos, adopting a systemic decision-making approach in research and innovation policy appears to be an effective strategy for fostering a competitive and resilient future EU. Time for a change and for new paradigms.

SURVEY ALERT: I am co-leading with Daniel Chavez (Transnational Institute Amsterdam) and Donna Andrews (University of Cape Town) a new initiative that will commence in 2025. We are about to receive a major grant from three sources, which will set up a "Global Green Industrial Policy Lab". The aim is to produce cutting edge research to support existing scholars working on industrial policy and energy transition in the new global context. We concluded two consultation workshops in Brazil and South Africa to facilitate thematic work and trilateral regional cooperation with the objective of creating South-South knowledge production to challenge conventional reading of industrial policy. Starting January 1, I will be leading the research on Asian green industrial policy which will culminate in a workshop in Bangkok in May 2025. Our first task is to map out existing projects, so we designed a survey that will facilitate us to identify organisations and individuals carrying out research in the broad field of global 'green' industrial policy. This is the link, and it will take you 5 minutes maximum to finish the survey: https://lnkd.in/gcZnXA2b Apologies for using Google Forms, but we are not collecting private or sensitive information - not even the email addresses - so please be assured that your information will only be used for the intellectual mapping exercise.

During last month’s Blue Economy Science Summit, the OECD - OCDE report on the contribution of Flanders’ public marine data to society was officially launched. 📝 📊 The key messages from this report are: ✅ Flanders is a hub for major national and international marine data repositories ✅ Flanders’ repositories are fundamental to the existence of complex value chains that affect a large variety of ocean economic activities globally ✅ Provision of public marine data in Flanders could be considered a model for other coastal regions ✅ Still more ground to cover to collect information from users and facilitate data access The report was produced in collaboration with OECD - OCDE, VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute, Departement Economie, Wetenschap en Innovatie (EWI), agentschap Maritieme Dienstverlening en Kust (MDK) - Vlaamse Hydrografie and De Blauwe Cluster vzw Read the report online: https://lnkd.in/dbbC8X4g
