The first day of the Week of Innovative Regions in Europe 2024 has wrapped up with a give-and-take on how to strengthen #innovation ecosystems in EU regions. “Closer collaboration between #science and #industry is key to promoting innovation,” according to Marina Papageorgiou of the Cyprus-based Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East – Climate and Atmosphere Research (EMME-CARE) project, but she pointed out it is “not always easy to achieve.” COOPERATE, a project at the Eindhoven University of Technology involving counterparts in several other EU countries has been cited as a successful example of how to build strong regional relationships. Project coordinator Ntorina Antoni explains it provides a platform for #knowledge transfer and research #partnerships between leading #research institutions. 📣 The European Commission has designated 151 regions as #RegionalInnovationValleys under the New European Innovation Agenda (NEIA)! This initiative aims to strengthen regional #innovationecosystems across Europe, bridge the innovation divide, and enhance the overall innovation performance of our continent. 🌍 📍 In the Czech Republic the regions of Central Bohemia, Northwest, Northeast, and Southwest have been identified as innovation valleys. 📢 ERA Hubs mentioned in the 1st implementation report on the New European Innovation Agenda!   From the European Research Executive Agency (REA), we are happy to see that two of our projects, ERA FABRIC and COOPERATE, have been considered in the first implementation report on the New European Innovation Agenda #NEIA. Funded under call HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-ERA-01-30 - Testing of the ERA Hub concept – pilot phase, ERA FABRIC and COOPERATE, managed by the European Research Executive Agency (REA), aim to design the #ERAHubs concept as a toolbox of pre-defined common standards of work, processes and outputs, and key performance indicators on operational, programme and strategic impacts. The aim of the ERA hubs is to develop and test a set of specifications and a methodology to help regions assess, benchmark and upgrade their R&I ecosystems to achieve minimum quality criteria on: (i) internal coordination; (ii) the provision of supporting services; and (iii) interconnection with other ecosystems. The rollout of the concept across Europe is expected by piloting the ERA Hub concept with a limited number of ecosystems through implementation in countries and regions where knowledge ecosystem structures aligned to the ERA Hubs concept already exist, combined with countries or regions where an integrated place-based approach is missing. Some of the key takeaways of the external mid-term evaluation of Horizon Europe: 👍 Both the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) and the EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology provide substantial EU added value. 👍The educational component of the EIT remains a distinctive feature and is of high relevance, given the shortage of skilled workers in high tech sectors in the EU. 👍The EIT uniquely supports innovation across Europe through its regional innovation hubs, including in less-developed areas. Operating in local languages, the EIT's geographically balanced model drives innovation across diverse regions. Therefore, the EIT also plays an important role in preventing brain drain. 👍KIC-supported start-ups and scale-ups attracted €3.5 billion in investment in 2021-2022 alone, in part thanks to the EIT KICs’ position and skill in attracting venture capital funds to their ecosystems. Denmark and Sweden are again the top innovation countries in the EU! 🙌 Each year the European Innovation Scoreboard publishes a ranking of the most innovative countries in the EU. In 2023, Denmark took the pole position followed by Sweden in 2nd place. 🥇🥈 What is the European Innovation Scoreboard? Each year, the European Commission assesses and benchmarks innovation performance amongst EU member states and associated countries. The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of the innovation landscape.
