Manufacturing Automation – Rethink Re-engineer and rationalize the production process for Automation! -- "In off-shoring the process originally, it was generally a matter of physically moving production specific equipment or locally procuring equivalents, transferring work instructions and providing initial training to the new production staff, both here and there. In that process, much/all of the production “know how” was transferred and the new production was slowly scaled up. Depending on how long the process has remained offshore, two things have gradually occurred. First, the production “know how” for that specific process has evolved so that it could be aligned with the local costs, local labor skill set, local labor content priorities as well as other organic industrial engineering reasons. Second, although most companies maintained a supervisory or control oversight of the off-shored process, this control gradually evolved to monitoring the supply chain metrics of the process only, (overall costs, quality and shipment timeliness), rather then the internal workings of the actual physical process itself. After all, this was an initial goal of the off shoring strategy itself - Outsourcing the headaches of actually “making the sausage”, as it were. ... In summary, if re-shoring production makes strategic sense and using the Covid crisis as the impetus, companies may be well advised to re-engineer and rationalize the production processes involved to include higher levels of automation and taking advantage of the significant advances in automation tools and platforms now readily available. In this approach, it should be noted that automating a process doesn't have to be an “all or nothing” proposition of going from a totally manual process to a fully automated, lights out, process. There are many intermediate automation steps which have excellent ROI justifications and which can streamline and simplify the process while decreasing production costs and increasing productivity." -- Do you have an example of simple automation playing a key role in reshoring? Where a functional modular kit or the mechatronic modular kit was the central topic until then, new questions have now arisen, such as 👉 How the “+” in #CTO+ can be localized better and automatically 👉 How planned primary and secondary demands can be steered in the supply chain long before orders are received, even with #ETO portions 👉 How a modular kit can be produced in a plant network 👉 How operational make-or-buy decisions can be made depending on the current situation 👉 How the topic of local-for-local or local customizing can be better implemented It quickly became obvious that an #engineering or mechatronic modular kit cannot achieve this, as it has to be industrialized at great expense each time an order is placed. 🛠 The aim must be to provide the modular kit already largely industrialized! This is the only way to avoid time-consuming industrialization for each order. To give the whole thing a name, we have coined the term Hybrid Modular Kit. Hybrid to express that the kit has industrialized and non-industrialized parts. In contrast to conventional modular kits, the HMK is characterized by the following points which are key enablers for its value proposition: 👉 It is largely industrialized and orchestrated by the supply chain 👉 its further development is characterized by the lead-to-order process 👉 its structural semantics are aligned with the process patterns (CTO, CTO+, ETO, MTS, ATO, MTO) 👉 its entities know how they are managed operationally in the supply chain 👉 Design and supply chain are situationally decoupled via a material/part proxy In almost all consulting situations, our customers now want to discuss the HMK in depth. The first thing I often hear is: “We can't do that.” However, we find that this defensive attitude subsides after a more intensive discussion. Once the completely new way of thinking has taken hold, the discussions quickly become downright enthusiastic! The Hybrid Modular Kit can be implemented anywhere. It's not that difficult if you're prepared to think in a completely new way. I am firmly convinced that the Hybrid Modular Kit will revolutionize the industry.
