🚨 NEW EPISODE | The Future of the European Green Deal In this second episode of Policy Crossroads, Brooke Moore and Garvan Walshe from the EPC engage in dialogue with MEP Sara Matthieu from the Greens – European Free Alliance, exploring the some key challenges with regard to the implementation of the Green Deal during the next mandate. The exchange revolves around the following questions: Where does the disconnect between the EU and public sentiment lie regarding environmental policies? How can the EU bridge this gap effectively? Are objections from the far right solely aimed at the agricultural sector, or do they reflect a wider criticism of the European economic system? What is the biggest challenge to implementing the Green Deal post-elections? How can the Green Deal involve citizens in the transition instead of imposing changes on them? Is there space for increased citizen participation to overcome obstacles and foster inclusion? Sara Matthieu argues that “we are not going to have this big renovation that we need if member states do not put the money where their mouth is”. Watch it here 👇

Yesterday, UK & EU Policy Lead, Georgia Berry at Patch, participated in a panel on the evolving EU policy landscape relating to carbon credits alongside Rene Velasquez, Frédéric Simon, Esmé Brandon and Jen Jenkins at IETA's European Climate Summit in Florence. Some takeaways: 🥕 🏒 There's a fine line between between providing guardrails for companies to participate in the VCM with confidence and integrity, and stifling a nascent industry through overregulation. 💡 The EU should lean heavily on existing guidance out there from trusted bodies, e.g. VCMI, ICVCM, rather than recreating the wheel. 🇺🇸 There are lessons that the EU could learn from the US, e.g. not over-regulating things at the start of an industry's journey to enable its growth; and the implementation of a similar approach to public procurement of credits.

🌟 On 15 March, at the "Translating the EU Green Deal into local action" conference, local and regional leaders took to the stage and called for a stronger collaboration with Europe to effectively implement the Green Deal. It's no secret, local and regional authorities face many challenges and need support to make their actions concrete. They also stressed the necessity to redesign effective multilevel governance processes in #EUGreenDeal implementation. 📢 "We need to become much better at planning and multilevel planning, seeing NECPs as investment plans. Local authorities should be fully involved, to see what is needed locally, regionally, and nationally." - Kurt Vandenberghe, Director General of DG CLIMA, European Commission Find out more 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eJ_w3VQU

Marine governance needs to evolve if we are to achieve climate objectives under the European Green Deal. But how do we move forward with this improvement given EGD’s complex, onion-like structure and intricate connections to land-based activities 🤔💭 Knowledge is power as they say, so the first step is to try and understand which EGD policies have a bearing on marine governance 📃➡🌊 This task kept us busy for more than a year so we are really excited to share the results! In this report, we remove EGD’s complexity layer by layer, breaking it down into 3 constituent parts: EGD elements, high-level strategies, and implementing and supporting policies. The report in numbers 🐋 Marine life: 7️⃣ policies mapped 🥤 Marine plastic: 1️⃣0️⃣ policies mapped ⚡ Marine energy: 6️⃣ policies mapped 🛳 Maritime transport: 1️⃣4️⃣ policies mapped 🔀 Cross-cutting priorities: 7️⃣ policies mapped In addition, we reviewed known institutional barriers and attributes (actor eligibility, responsibility, control, social connectivity, conflict, social learning, accountability) to indicate how these can manifest themselves in the reviewed policies. That’s a real treasure trove of information. Happy reading 😊☕📖 https://lnkd.in/dFXzuEnA

digging deeper than just the law, but looking at what the EGD means (and means not) in practice
Join our webinar series on the state of the EU Green Deal! The series starts on 13 March and consists of six 30 minute talks where experts shed a light on the Green Deal in practice, followed by a Q&A. The European Green Deal is the most ambitious and comprehensive policy framework to tackle climate change and environmental challenges in the EU and beyond. Introduced in 2019, we ask the question: What opportunities for business does the Green Deal offer today? During the first webinar we will discuss what’s up for transition assets together with our A&O experts Gauthier van Thuyne, Marinus Winters, Filipa Serra, Rachel O'Reilly and Dr. Moritz Meister. Member of European Parliament Pascal Canfin will be our final speaker to wrap up the series. We are partnering with ECOS to implement a project granted by the Green Screen Catalyst Fund. Our research will focus on the environmental costs of Europe’s data centers and the need to reduce energy consumption in the digital economy 🏢 Given the climate crisis and the fact that ICTs contribute significantly to global carbon emissions and electricity consumption, it is crucial to ensure that ICTs are developed and used responsibly and resource-efficiently. The outcomes of our research can hopefully inform and drive future policy efforts. The link to the post about our project is available in the comment below 👇

I am very happy that we received a grant from the Green Screen Catalyst Fund to explore how ICT energy consumption in the EU could be regulated! "Our project is designed to help bring the issue of the sustainability of information technology, and in particular data centers, to the agenda of all stakeholders to enact policy change. In the meantime, we also wish to create a space for NGOs to collaborate, share narratives, and combine their efforts to tackle the interdependency between climate justice and digital rights." #ClimateJustice #DigitalRights
