🦠 Each year, 4.3 million patients in the EU/EEA acquire at least one healthcare-associated infection, many of which are resistant to antimicrobials. This underscores the urgent need for coordinated action to combat antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) and protect public health. During World AMR Awareness Week, MEP Tiemo Wölken, Chair of the MEP Interest Group on AMR, highlights the importance of taking decisive steps to address this growing challenge. EPHA, as the organizer of the AMR Stakeholder Network and co-host of the MEP Interest Group on AMR alongside Health Care Without Harm Europe, contributes to EU efforts through: 🔹 Shaping Policy and Practice: Using evidence to inform policy and promote sustainable solutions through a #OneHealth approach. EPHA collaborates with stakeholders from human, animal, and planetary health sectors, as well as private organisations and communities, to develop cost-effective interventions. 🔹 Advocating for stronger action: Promoting more robust and equitable measures to address AMR at European and global levels. 🔹 Raising awareness: Ensuring AMR remains a key priority on the EU policy agenda through continuous advocacy and engagement. 🔹 Fostering stewardship: Supporting capacity-building and collaboration through partnerships, networks, and events to strengthen AMR stewardship. Through collective efforts, we aim to mitigate AMR’s impact and safeguard a healthier future. At the UN High-level Meeting (#UNHLM) on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) on September 26, governments will sign a global political declaration committing to respond to AMR. As a medical humanitarian organisation, we see the impact of AMR every day, especially in many of the low-resource settings in which we operate. Ahead of the UNHLM on AMR, here are our recommendations for the declaration 👇 We call on governments to: 🎯 Prioritise universal access to effective diagnostics and drugs. R&D of new antibiotics must target the most urgent global public health needs and have conditions making them affordable and accessible to all. 🎯 Strengthen infection prevention and control, and invest in health infrastructure to reduce transmission of resistant infections. 🎯 Invest in lab infrastructure, training and innovations in low-resource settings to expand access to testing, enable proper diagnosis, and prevent, detect and control AMR more effectively. 🎯 Prioritise community & civil society engagement in national AMR plans and in governance and funding decisions at the international level. 🎯 Ensure that the independent evidence panel outlined in the current draft declaration will be balanced, transparent, accountable & includes affected communities, in order to have the biggest impact on #AMR. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gFMFnFkv #UNHLM

“I represent Sweden in the joint endeavour to secure sustainable access to the effective prevention and treatment of infections for all”, says Malin Grape, Ambassador on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), Sweden. “On a daily basis, this means dialogue and collaborations with individual countries or local organizations, and on broader multilateral platforms all the way to the level of the United Nations. Already in university, I was caught by the many aspects of the AMR challenge and how dependent we are on effective antibiotics for basic as well as advanced health services. Never could I have imagined back then that I would spend my professional life on counteracting the effects of ever-increasing AMR.” “Sweden paid early attention to the AMR threat, and thanks to committed work we have seen a continuous decrease in antibiotic prescribing for more than 20 years. There is, however, large room for further improvements in preventing the spread of infections and resistance and assuring that treatment is available and effective when we need it. For this we need collective and immediate action, across sectors, regions and levels of society. Everybody can make a difference in a whole-of-society approach. We are all at risk of untreatable infections. I strongly believe that together we can mobilize to turn the trend and achieve reliable and equitable access to infection treatments, now and for future generations.” #WHOEuro is sharing #Stories_of_AMR throughout the year, from countries across the European Region to raise awareness about the serious impact of #AMR. Let’s prevent #AMR together. #UNGA79; #AMRAwareness; #onehealth; #saveantibiotics; #handlewithcare; #HealthForAll

🌍 World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2024: United to Combat AMR (18-24 November) 🌟 #Antimicrobial #resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time, threatening to undermine decades of progress in medicine and public health. During this week, we reflect on the importance of collective action and sustainable solutions to tackle AMR. As a Vice-Coordinator of European People's Party in #SANT Committee of the European Parliament I support combating AMR by: ✅ Advocating for stronger EU regulations on the use of antibiotics in human and animal health. ✅ Promoting the development of new antimicrobials and alternatives to traditional antibiotics. ✅ Addressing cross-border health threats through cooperation between member states. ✅ Supporting initiatives to monitor and mitigate antimicrobial resistance, aligning with the One Health approach. The theme for the World AMR Awareness Week 2024 is "Educate. Advocate. Act now", calling on the global community to #educate stakeholders on AMR and take concrete actions in response to AMR. 📢 Let’s prioritize responsible antibiotic use, invest in innovation, and strengthen global partnerships. The fight against AMR depends on us all. 🔗 Learn more about European and international initiatives on AMR at https://lnkd.in/dWTHUrb3 #WAAW2024 #AntimicrobialResistance #EUHealth #SANT #OneHealth

I am excited to be part of the World AMR Congress & Disease Prevention Control Summit on September 5th & 6th in Philadelphia to join a panel to discuss "Strengthening Antibiotic Regulation: Antimicrobial Resistance in Lower-Middle-Income Countries and Its Global Implications." On behalf of US Pharmacopeia, I will be highlighting the critical importance of quality assurance for antimicrobials, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It's imperative to understand that poor quality or substandard medicines, often due to weak regulatory health systems and inadequate oversight of good manufacturing practices, significantly contribute to the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance. This issue is not widely understood, but we must bring it to the forefront. Ensuring the quality of antimicrobials is not just about safeguarding individual health; it's about protecting the global community from the threat of resistance. Learn more @ https://lnkd.in/gUCvQdzw I look forward to engaging with other experts on this pressing issue and working together towards sustainable solutions. #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance #PharmaceuticalQuality #GlobalHealth #WorldAMRCongress2024

WORLD AMR AWARENESS WEEK! Antimicrobial resistance is simply defined as the inability of drugs to treat infectious diseases as effectively as before. AMR is no doubt a ravaging global threat to clinical medicine. In recent times, studies have revealed a declining effectiveness of antimicrobial agents to infectious pathogens, thereby leading to increasing death rates and incapacitation by these pathogens. The development of antimicrobial resistance has been proven to result from a number of factors including human activities such as antimicrobial overuse and misuse. This significant global health topic is celebrated annually with unique themes for public engagement and education. This year’s theme, ‘Educate. Advocate. Act now’, aims to create more awareness and educate the public on certain ways to mitigate AMR at individual levels, such as; improved personal hygiene, proper use of antimicrobials, completion of dosages, and reduction of self-medication. Everyone has a part to play in defeating this menace. Let’s act now! #AMR #OneHealth #WAAW #Actnow!

GLOBAL ANTIMICROBIAL AWARENESS WEEK It was a great Privilege to share the panel stage with the experts in AMR Stewardship Program. The discussions were very vital which mainly focused on the global impact of Antimicrobial Resistance. If I could recommend one change to current infection prevention policies, it would be the mandatory integration of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs into infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines at all healthcare levels. While AMS is often implemented in larger hospitals, it’s frequently overlooked in smaller healthcare facilities and community settings, where antibiotic misuse is rampant. By embedding AMS into IPC policies, we can ensure that every healthcare facility—regardless of size or resources—actively monitors and optimizes antibiotic use. This integration would involve routine antibiotic audits, real-time feedback to prescribers, and the establishment of clear, evidence-based prescribing guidelines. Additionally, these policies should mandate ongoing education for healthcare workers on AMR and the importance of stewardship. When IPC and AMS work hand-in-hand, we not only prevent infections but also minimize the inappropriate use of antibiotics, tackling AMR from both ends. This change could significantly enhance our ability to control resistance and protect the efficacy of existing treatments for future generations. Carole W.
