The ECAP July issue is out now! In his editorial "Waking up in the new normal" (https://lnkd.in/eUYhjcwx) Julian Koenig writes about the recent EU parliament elections and its significance for child and adolescent mental health. "...ESCAP’s position on this year’s European parliament election (https://lnkd.in/eUuMTJfa) was clear in raising awareness for the “deep scars” that multiplying crises left on the European youth, demanding that youth mental is treated as a priority throughout the next legislative period. This month’s issue of European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, adds to the existing evidence highlighting the need for policy action and provides clear guidance on this path. A reoccurring topic are crises and the handling of their aftermath...." Open Access Special Issue paper from the CAMH journal Debate: Involuntary treatment and detention are a necessary part of mental health care – a perspective from low and middle-income countries https://bit.ly/3PtVUQ8 'Mental health care is underpinned by human rights. However, certain mental health presentations can be associated with increased risk to self or others. Thus, appropriate and effective care plan to mitigate the risk may include a temporary restriction of the person's human rights. Legal frameworks are required to ensure appropriate safeguards for the affected person, and clarity about boundaries of necessity and proportionality for clinicians. The restriction needs to be proportionate, for the shortest possible period, done in a humane manner, and in a safe environment. Effective early mental interventions can reduce need for human right restrictions by preventing acute escalations in risk-related behaviours. While these principles apply across all regions, we discuss the particular circumstances in low and middle-income countries.' September is National Suicide Prevention Month and Wyman recognizes the importance of healthy relationships in addressing the current mental health crisis impacting our nation’s young people. In 2021, the released an advisory calling the mental health of our nation’s youth an “urgent public health crisis”. And, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), and Children’s Hospital Association declared a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health. Wyman is addressing the call-to-action in three ways: 1. Positive adult role modeling of college and career options. 2. Providing emotional support, particularly during stressful events and life transitions; and 3. Connecting youth to peers from diverse backgrounds. If you are interested in learning more about the ways Wyman’s evidence-based programing is engaging the need for healthy relationships with peers and adults, visit https://lnkd.in/evBxEtsv or visit the link in our bio. Can stopping Gadget 📱 screening 👋 really benefit your child? 🤔 Negative Effects of Suddenly Stopping Gadget Screening: -Irritability and mood swings -Withdrawal symptoms similar to addiction -Increased resistance to other activities -Difficulty focusing and concentrating -Disruption in sleep patterns Here are what different Psychological theories describe this: Attachment Theory: The child might interpret the sudden removal of their gadgets as a disruption to their sense of security and attachment. They may feel abandoned or unloved, as if their source of comfort and familiarity has been taken away abruptly. Trauma Theory: The child may perceive the sudden cessation of gadget screening as a traumatic event, especially if they have formed strong emotional bonds with their devices. This could lead to feelings of loss, anxiety, and even a sense of betrayal, as if something precious to them has been forcefully taken away. Trust Theory: The child's trust in caregivers or authority figures may be undermined if they perceive the sudden removal of gadgets as a breach of trust. They may question the reliability and consistency of those responsible for setting boundaries, leading to challenges in the parent-child relationship. Solution: Along with repeated psychoeducation and engaging in perceptual motor development and proprioceptive activities and following strategies things may help: 1. Gradually reducing the screen time in terms of half an hour a week. 2. Transition from stimulating videos to less stimulating ones 3. Allowing to watch auditory-dominated content But with Reduce video movement gradually and Shared reading activities. 4. Slowly Shift to entirely audio-based content. It's time to guide our children towards a balanced lifestyle filled with enriching experiences beyond the screen #ChildDevelopment #ParentingTips #ScreenTime #BehavioralIssues #Tantrums #ADHDawareness #TechDetox #DigitalParenting #MentalHealthKids #HealthyScreenTime #ParentingStruggles #ParentingJourney #GadgetAddiction #TechBoundaries #MindfulParenting #Autism #ASD #BehaviorTherapy #pediatricians #psychiatrist #Psychologists #childpsychology #ClinicalPsychologist

We are looooong overdue for a #psychiatry of 2024 that meets the needs of the people in humane, compassionate, and protective ways instead of making things worse. My profession does far too much harm to people, so I created my own way of doing things. I am so proud to.... -Keep people at home whenever possible during mental health emergencies so the police are avoided at all costs--because involving them can be fatal. -Write fierce school letters or court report to ensure racially minoritized children are not #adultified and overly punished or criminalized--which can devastate their developmental trajectories. -Show up for medical appointments, drawing upon my knowledge of all health inequities (not just mental health) to ensure people do not endure medical neglect or denial of treatment. I am thrilled to see children, families, and adults in California, Colorado, New York, New Mexico, and New Jersey. Check out my website www.rupileghamd.com. Therapeutic approaches, such as Systemic Autism-related Family Enabling (SAFE), can help improve family dynamics and support children’s development. #MentalHealth professionals may also play a key role in enhancing communication, reducing stress, and fostering resilience. Effective family #therapy can strengthen relationships and help manage the challenges of autism more effectively. “Supporting Families with Autistic Children – What More Can Be Done?” By Narpinder Kaur Malhi, MD Rama Rao Gogineni, MD Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry Family Committee 📰 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/enrxhKSw
