"The great news for LGBTQIA+ individuals is that there are a number of ways to build one's family. To conceive you need an egg, a sperm, and a uterus and each of these components can be contributed by one or more partners or by a third party. For individuals or couples that do not have or are not able to produce one of these components, they can utilize donor eggs and/or donor sperm to help create an embryo. Additionally, a gestational carrier (often referred to as a surrogate) can be used to carry a pregnancy when there is no uterus available," shares Phillip Romanski MD, MSc in a recent conversation with The Lanby. "The most important thing for these individuals who are interested in learning about family building options is to talk with a fertility specialist (REI Physician) to learn how they can best accomplish their family building goals. The first question I want an individual or a couple to consider is how they envision building their family. Who will contribute the eggs, the sperm, and the uterus for the pregnancy?" For the full breakdown from Dr. Romanski on family-building options for members of the LGBTQIA+ community read on here: https://lnkd.in/eUdrVZBw

🔬 Sperm count might be one of the first measures you consider when thinking about male fertility. After all, it can be a vital indicator of a male’s ability to conceive. Without enough sperm, it’s unlikely that an egg will be fertilized. 🏃♂️ But – did you know that your daily habits could be affecting your sperm count? In some cases, making healthier lifestyle choices can improve sperm count. In others, medications, fertility treatments, or surgical interventions may be required. IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination. It's a fertility treatment where sperm is placed directly into a woman's uterus to increase the chances of fertilization. Here's how it works: 𝐎𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: First, the woman's menstrual cycle is closely monitored to determine when she's ovulating. This is when an egg is released from the ovary and is ready to be fertilized. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The sperm sample, usually provided by the male partner or a sperm donor, is collected and washed to separate the healthy sperm from the semen. 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Once the woman is ovulating, the prepared sperm is inserted directly into her uterus using a thin catheter. This is a relatively simple and painless procedure that can be done in a clinic. 𝐖𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲: After the insemination, the woman will wait to see if fertilization occurs. If successful, the fertilized egg will implant itself into the lining of the uterus and pregnancy can result. IUI is often used for couples who have unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or issues with cervical mucus. It's a less invasive and less expensive option compared to other fertility treatments like IVF, and it can be a good choice for couples looking to conceive with a little extra help. Why Sperm testing is essential for a healthy pregnancy carried to full term. It is little known that the health of sperm seriously impacts the health of a foetus. Unfortunately many miscarriages are due to poor quality sperm of one of several negative aspects of sperm. A DNA fragmentation test takes testing to another level and I recommend this for my client at the very beginning of their fertility journey even when they are trying to conceive naturally. Why? It can save heartache for the couple and prevent wasting time. The science - What does DNA actually mean - we hear this phrase but do we understand the importance of it? Deoxyribonucleic acid is the molecule that carries genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism, in particular the embryo and then foetus. DNA is made of two linked strands that wind around each other to resemble a twisted ladder — a shape known as a double helix. Sperm DNA can be damaged during the sperm production stage, breaking the DNA into smaller fragments and meaning men with high levels of sperm DNA damage are a) less likely to get their partner pregnant and b) have increased risk of miscarriage. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI, involves injecting a single live sperm directly into the center of a human egg. The technique was developed to help achieve fertilization for couples with severe male factor infertility or couples who have had failure to fertilize in a previous in vitro fertilization (IVF) attempt. The procedure overcomes many of the barriers to fertilization and allows couples with little hope of achieving successful pregnancy to obtain fertilized embryos. #ICSI #IVF
