Attending the IHI Forum in Orlando, FL: Driving Quality Improvement in Healthcare This week, I’m attending the IHI Forum Conference in Orlando, FL—a gathering of healthcare leaders passionate about advancing quality improvement. It’s an inspiring opportunity to learn, share, and collaborate on innovative approaches to improving care delivery. At Sutter Health, quality improvement isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a foundational pillar of how we deliver exceptional care. In behavioral health, measurement-informed care is a key example of this commitment. By leveraging data to assess outcomes and guide treatment decisions, we’re not only improving clinical outcomes but also enhancing patient experiences. As we face increasing complexity in healthcare, the importance of systems like this cannot be overstated. Whether in behavioral health or across other service lines, continuous improvement ensures we are meeting the needs of our patients and communities. I’m looking forward to gaining more insights from the IHI Forum to bring back to my work.

As part of the Patient Experience strategic priority in Strategic Plan 2026, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) has begun the design and implementation of a co-design framework. This framework aims to foster a shared understanding of co-design among staff, patients, and families, ensuring it becomes a cornerstone of how we deliver care. Over the past two years, tremendous effort has gone into defining what co-design means specifically for TBRHSC. A diverse committee of over 30 individuals—including frontline staff, physicians, administrative staff, and Patient Family Advisors (PFAs)—collaborated to craft a definition that reflects the values of our Hospital. The hospital-at-home concept is rather interesting. I am not quite ready to share my thoughts on it. But it's important to think about the current hospital model before trying to take the inpatient to the patient. How necessary are most hospitalizations? How impactful is the average inpatient stay? How much of it is financially driven? What is the impact on caregivers? Who will be sent to the patient's home? What conditions will be covered? How will the patient's health literacy impact their outcomes? How will quality metrics be measured? What will the risk be to clinicians?

🟠 Today is World Patient Safety Day 🟠 World Patient Safety Day is a powerful reminder of the need for global solidarity and collective action to prioritize patient safety across all countries. It unites patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, healthcare leaders, and policymakers to commit to making care safer for all. The World Health Organization highlights this by recognizing patient safety as a global health priority and establishing World Patient Safety Day, observed every year on 17 September. As I reflect on my journey, I found some photos from the Patient Safety Awards we celebrated in the UK back in 2018. Patient safety has been my mission for many years—and it's one I remain passionate about. 💛 At QUMEA, we place patient safety at the forefront of everything we do. The Importance of Cultural Change in Healthcare Experiences (Part II). “The Disconnect Between Expectations and Reality in Healthcare” When our loved ones are admitted to healthcare facilities, we sign consent forms with the full confidence that this is the best course of action. We expect a holistic, transparent approach to care that prioritizes the patient's values and collaboratively develops specific, personalized care goals. Additionally, we anticipate that complicated or complex medical problems will be thoroughly discussed among the relevant interdisciplinary teams, with a shared concern and a single, well-programmed, practical plan of care. This plan would be informed by expert opinions, incorporate smart anticipation, and ensure full rehabilitation in advance of considering any procedures or their consequences. Unfortunately, this idealized vision of healthcare is often just a dream that never comes to fruition. The reality that caregivers and patients face is vastly different from these reasonable expectations. Despite our trust in the system and our loved ones' wellbeing, the healthcare experience is frequently marred by a disconnect between what we anticipate and what is actually delivered.
