A ruling by Italy's Council of State last year gutted the right to access government information. The ruling was in response to a case brought by Altreconomia which sought to overturn a ministerial decree that excluded information on borders & immigration from the right to information. Information related to cooperation between Italy and Frontex on border surveillance is now also excluded from the scope of information requests. This is the latest step in a saga that we documented in March last year: European migration policies have led to appalling violations of human rights, such as violent pushbacks and abandonment at sea. However, they are also propelling other problems–such as the denial of public access to information, and attacks on journalism and journalists. Read the translated article by Altreconomia from February this year, here: https://lnkd.in/dpw9Mb7Z Read more about the threats to access to information here: https://lnkd.in/d32_B7wR

Thanks for sharing Steve F, F.ISRM The Labour Government's approach to immigration and border security includes the establishment of a Border Security Command (BSC) to address illegal immigration and small boat crossings. Key differences include an integrated approach combining multiple agencies, a focus on tackling organized crime, and increased resources for recruitment. Challenges include the implementation timeline, addressing root causes of migration, international cooperation, and processing capacity.
📊Assessing Labour's New Approach to Immigration and Border Security📊 The newly elected Labour government has launched its Border #Security Command (BSC) to address illegal #immigration and small boat crossings. As this initiative unfolds, it's important to objectively consider its potential impact and challenges: Current Status: • The BSC has been officially announced • Recruitment for key positions, including Border Security Commander, is underway • Legislation is being prepared to introduce new powers and measures #Potential #Strengths: 1. Integrated approach: Combining efforts from multiple agencies 2. Focus on tackling organized crime: Targeting smuggling networks 3. Increased resources: Plans to recruit more investigators and analysts #Challenges to Consider: 1. Implementation timeline: Full operational capacity may take months 2. Complexity of migration drivers: Addressing root causes beyond enforcement 3. International cooperation: Effectiveness depends on partnerships with European countries 4. Processing capacity: Existing asylum claim backlog remains a concern #Contextual Factors: • Post-Brexit landscape continues to affect international cooperation • Ongoing debates about safe and legal routes for asylum seekers • Balancing border security with humanitarian obligations. As the situation continues to develop, it will be crucial to #monitor key metrics such as crossing numbers, processing times, and international cooperation agreements to assess the effectiveness of this new approach. #UKImmigration #BorderSecurity #PolicyAnalysis #LabourGovernment #AsylumSystem Motivation for the post:

Immigration, security, justice: moving beyond the ideological deadlock In his general policy speech, Michel Barnier outlined a pragmatic and European approach to immigration management and security. He proposes strengthening border controls in line with European laws, following Germany's example. Locally, action plans will be deployed to maintain security, and the management of irregular migrants present in French territory will be reinforced. https://buff.ly/3zQfiCj
