Another beautiful event organised by Ecoescuelas 🌳 This time at Eurocolegio Casvi Boadilla in Madrid 🙌🏼 In an inspiring day of climate action, 6th-grade students from Casvi Boadilla School actively participated in the European Tree Planting Day by planting native species suitable for their school grounds and surroundings. The activity not only consisted of planting trees but also learning previously about the environment, how to take care of it and how their actions can contribute to mitigating climate change. To ensure the traceability of the planted trees, students also used the Life Terra platform to tag each tree planted. Great job! 🙌🏼🌳

[Champion of the International Poster Competition in Aceh International Sea Turtle Festival] Alhamdulillah, I had the opportunity to participate in the infographic poster competition organized by the Marine Science Department of Universitas Syiah Kuala . For this competition, I chose the topic of climate change, specifically its impact on sea turtles, a species increasingly threatened by the ongoing changes in our climate. My interest in this issue stems from my love for the ocean, especially the breathtaking seas of Aceh. However, climate change has become a global issue that is eroding the habitats of sea turtles, whose populations are critically declining. This is mainly due to the rising sea levels caused by climate change. Sea turtles play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. This has motivated me to contribute by raising awareness about activities that can trigger climate change. I believe that the "International Student Competitions" poster category, as part of the "Aceh International Sea Turtle Festival," offers significant exposure to advocate for this cause, encouraging others to take action and make an impact on environmental conservation. So, let’s be the Guardians of the Sea to protect sea turtles from climate change before we have no more chances. #climatechange #postercompetition #seaturtle #usk #universitassyiahkuala #fkpusk #protectseaturtle

🌊 Exciting news! Guardians of the Blue's underwater cleanups are featured as an example of best practices in how water sports can help preserve the ocean in the OSES Good Practices Handbook! 📘 Featuring contributions from 25 initiatives in 17 countries from the sporting, academic, and marine sectors, this guide was born from a desire to raise awareness among young generations and inspire action against ocean degradation. Water sports practitioners are among the first affected by climate change and the degradation of aquatic ecosystems. We hope this handbook helps them understand how they can protect the waters and why they deserve clean waters teeming with life. 👉 To explore the guide and learn more, visit the OSES website: https://lnkd.in/ekvb27PQ. Dominika Wojcieszek (European Marine Science Educators' Association (EMSEA)), Idoia Fuertes (Surfrider España), and Begoña Vendrell Simón (Universitat de Barcelona) led the creation of this guide as main authors and partners of the European OSES project. Goede morgen Nederland! The rest of the week will be staying in this land of tulips, canals, dams, and most importantly, stroopwafels (which I should avoid eating, too many at least). Will be attending NAPA seminar Rotterdam and make a presentation about the digital means in emission reduction - there might still be couple seats left if you’re interested in joining. Further to that, will tour to help our customers to reduce emissions and emission compliance costs. Schedule starts to be quite tight but have still one or two slots available if you’re interested in hearing more about this fun topic where we at AHTI Climate can help. Fun, becausse it is always fun to reduce both, emissions AND the related costs, at the same time. #shipemissionwarrior #netherlands #fueleumaritime

🌊 I am excited to announce that I am part of the The Erdős Institute-NewAtlantis Labs Fellowship Program for Summer 2024! 🌊 The goal of NewAtlantis is to protect and preserve our oceans, the very source of life on Earth. As climate change continues to impact our planet, our oceans and marine life face increasing challenges. Considering that fish are a primary protein source for a significant portion of the human population and the fishing industry is worth trillions of dollars, the effects of climate change on our oceans are indeed multidimensional. During this fellowship, we will use machine learning techniques to develop and train models that can predict and mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change on ocean life. For instance, scientists have observed that warming waters accelerate fish metabolism, increasing their oxygen needs. However, fish gills, which extract oxygen from water, do not grow proportionately with their bodies, potentially leading to smaller fish sizes. By applying machine learning, can we identify early indicators of declining oxygen levels in the ocean? allowing for proactive measures to protect marine life. I am incredibly excited to contribute to this important initiative with NewAtlantis and to work alongside brilliant minds dedicated to safeguarding our oceans. Innovative Vertical Gardens @ Mayoor – 2024 Students directly engage with plant growth, gaining a deeper understanding of the role plants play in the environment. They can learn about concepts like mitigating climate change, improving air quality, and creating habitats for biodiversity. Vertical gardens are a great way to introduce students to concepts like resource efficiency. They can learn about water conservation techniques and the benefits of growing food locally. #RootsAndShootsUAE #RootsAndShoots #JaneGoodall #Sustainability

🌊 No Island Without Rivers: Exploring Samoa's Hidden Lifelines 🌴 I'm thrilled to share my piece on Samoa's unique river system. So glad to be part of Übersee-Museum's fantastic Blue Continent project led by Etta Grotrian, Abhay Adhikari and team. In this article, I explore the unique river systems that flow through this island nation and a citizen science project that focuses on understanding it better. Often overshadowed by its stunning coastline and threatened by rising sea levels, Samoa's river system is vital to its ecosystems and communities. They shape culture, provide sustenance, and face immense challenges due to climate change and development pressures. 🌍🌱 These lifelines remind us of the interconnectedness of land, water, and people—critical to preserving our planet's natural and cultural heritage. Do check out the project, The Blue Continent, and my piece. Increasing the speed of response to Climate Change A couple of weeks ago (21st February 2023), I was fortunate enough to attend the first of the “Talgarth Talks” organised by the Black Mountains College (https://lnkd.in/emHypGrK) which is set in the glorious landscape of the Black Mountains and Bannau Brycheiniog here in Wales. The interesting and thought provoking presentation by Dr Rupert Read and was entitled “Pathways to change, both imaginative and practical: Introducing the Climate Majority Project”. You can find a recording of his presentation here: Black Mountains College - Talgarth Talks Series | Rupert Read (youtube.com) In truth, I wasn’t sure what to expect or how ‘radical’ the message might be, but I was impressed by the tenor of what Dr Read said and the pathway he suggests may lies ahead. I have to admit it wasn’t the most optimistic view of the future, but it’s hard not to agree that we need to increase the urgency and pace of society’s response to climate change. Whilst awareness of climate change may be widespread in the population, the imperative for action is less so. Equally, the response will need a greater commitment from “ordinary people” if we are to avoid most damaging effects. As it seems that we cannot depend on political or business leaders to respond quickly enough to save us from the worst of the possible outcomes, we need to persuade a wider section of the population to engage with the response. Reducing our energy bills is not enough. There is a need to bridge the gap between awareness and action. I was intrigued by the question of how individuals, who may not have the appetite for the more radical activities of Extinction Rebellion and other similar groups, can promote the necessary change. How can we influence and encourage others to do the same? Dr Read covered many aspects that I hadn’t really considered before; hardly surprising as Dr Read is a philosopher, rather than a scientist or engineer. He explored the role of cultural organisations in this. The point that resonated with me was that of the role of educational institutions. This reflects things that have been discussed in my role on the Industrial Advisory Board of the Engineering School of Cardiff University and has given me food for further thought on this. Are we producing engineers and scientists who are equipped for what lies ahead? I was sufficiently impressed to buy Dr Read’s book “The Climate Majority Project”, and I will post again when I have finished reading it.
