This week we attended the 2nd EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference in Grenada. For over a decade, the Caribbean has struggled with the overwhelming influx of Sargassum, which has caused environmental damage, economic strain, and public health concerns. Governments and stakeholders are now shifting focus toward innovative management and commercial applications of Sargassum as a natural resource. At Origin by Ocean, we have created a biorefinery process to turn harmful algae into valuable products. For our algae-based products, we utilize 100% of the algae. The products are suited for cosmetics, packaging & materials, agriculture, textiles, and detergents. In order to scale up solutions, investments are needed. Let's focus on investing in the future of our Blue Planet. 🌏🔴 At the conference, we spoke about sustainable business models and building business ecosystems. For the Caribbean Islands, it is important to have a value creation model that fits the small islands. We will continue to work closely with the Dominican Republic and we are determined to execute our vision with small islands like Grenada. 🤝 The concrete outcome is that Origin by Ocean will run a case study with the Government of Grenada on feasibility of the value chain of 4000t/a biorefinery investment. This shows our determination to execute our vision with small islands in the Caribbean like Grenada. We are looking forward to this development! You can invest in the future of our #BluePlanet with our solutions: https://hubs.ly/Q02R-NH50

🌍🌊 Awakening New Depths in Africa's Blue Economy 🌊🌍 Earlier this month, we celebrated World Oceans Day 2024 with the theme "Awakening New Depths," emphasising the need to reimagine our interactions with the oceans. This theme is particularly relevant to Africa's Blue Economy, which plays a crucial role in the continent's economic development and environmental sustainability. At the African Centre for a Green Economy, we recognise the significance of these sectors and are committed to promoting sustainable practices and innovative solutions. By prioritising sectors like sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, fostering eco-friendly marine tourism, advancing renewable ocean energy, ensuring efficient maritime transport, and investing in education and research, Africa can responsibly harness its marine resources. These efforts can drive economic growth, enhance environmental conservation, and improve livelihoods, securing a prosperous and sustainable future for Africa's Blue Economy. Just like in the previous two years, the Biodiversa+ partnership invited representatives from the Enlarged Stakeholder Board to the annual in-person general assembly. And just like in the previous two years, the event was packed with important strategic decisions. I can attest to the importance of meeting the partners directly—the impressions and thoughts that were shared will be brought back to the Enlarged Stakeholder Board and the Advisory Board in future meetings. After a busy couple of days, it is safe to say that biodiversity research has never been higher on the agenda (and of greater importance). We can look forward to critical leaps in the methods and technologies being used to improve our understanding of biodiversity and its conservation.
Just wrapped up an incredible 3 days at our annual General Assembly in Sofia, Bulgaria! We've laid the groundwork for our 4th year and beyond, outlining key activities, future call processes, impact framework, and strategic directions. Always great to connect with everyone for these productive discussions. Looking forward to continuing our work together for biodiversity! 🤝🌿 Special thanks to our hosts at the Bulgarian Executive Environment Agency (ExEA, with the Ministry of Environment and Water of Bulgaria).
