The European Parliament election in #Estonia could serve as a wakeup call for the country's government, writes Martin Mölder. The key question will be whether the ruling Reform Party, led by Kaja Kallas, loses one of its seats or not. If it does not, the party will have an incentive to continue with business as usual, despite the government's declining popularity. If the party does lose this one seat, however, it will be a signal that something needs to change in the party leadership ahead of the next local elections in 2025 and parliamentary elections in 2027. https://lnkd.in/gQqhnGix

On the 2024 European Elections: While the elections have not led to a landslide shift to the right, there is a notable consolidation of far-right parties at the European level. Still, the pro-European centre is holding firm and maintains a majority. In their new Policy Brief, Jannik Jansen and Thu Nguyen argue that the results likely indicate by-and-large continuity in the #EuropeanParliament, including an ongoing shift to the right on contested issues due to a perforated ‘cordon sanitaire’. But the election results had heavily disruptive consequences on the national level, which in #France has triggered snap parliamentary elections. This will have pronounced impact on the balance of power in the (European) Council and on the #EU as a whole. The trajectory of politics in #Cyprus can best be described as "fluid" ahead of the country's European Parliament election, writes Yiannos Katsourides. The decision to hold local elections and European elections simultaneously - for the first time in the country's history - makes predictions difficult. Meanwhile Turkish Cypriot voters could have an important influence on the outcome, with three Turkish Cypriot candidates set to feature on the platforms of Greek Cypriot parties. https://lnkd.in/gk-RfQCa #EP2024

Far too often, European Parliament elections are dominated by simplistic debates about "more" or "less" Europe, writes Claes de Vreese. But politicians, journalists and citizens can ensure the 2024 European Parliament elections make a difference. Political parties should move beyond soundbites about Europe and focus on the topics they want to tackle. And while there is nothing wrong with boiler-plate news coverage of the elections, journalists should aim to help contextualise and explain campaign conflicts rather than reducing them to a pro-EU vs anti-EU narrative. For citizens, the job is simple - vote! European Parliament elections are one of the biggest exercises in democracy across the globe and they remain something worth celebrating, regardless of which candidates emerge victorious on election day. https://lnkd.in/g6xPW5DQ #EP2024

In the latest edition of SA Perspectives, I suggest that Bangladesh’s interim government consider holding a referendum on the related questions of how far to go with reforms and when to hold elections. Bottom line—let the people decide. https://lnkd.in/eg553-vP

2024 is the year of elections. 97 countries will be voting and 2 billion people will get to exercise their democratic right. I have had the privilege (and duty) to vote in 2 of the 97 and this has been a stark reminder that similar actions taken inside of different systems can result in very different outcomes. In both countries, the composition of government has changed after a long period of an incumbent ruling unchallenged and it is clear that this is what the majority of the people wanted. In the UK, Labour won an historic landslide victory and now have 63% of the available seats in parliament. In South Africa, the ANC took a beating at the polls and plunged to just under 40% of the available seats. But here’s the fascinating thing … the ANC won 40% of the votes in SA and Labour won 34% of the UK’s votes. “Huh?” I hear you ask. Mandate to govern and huge celebrations for the party with 34% but enforced coalitions and soul-searching for the party with 40%. Context matters and the context here is that the 2 countries have very different electoral systems. ‘First past the post’ in the UK, proportional representation in SA. The former supports fewer, larger parties and is more likely to result in a clear mandate to govern, even if the majority of voters didn’t vote for the government. The latter ensures that all minorities are represented, but is more likely to result in coalition government and all its potential uncertainties. Both are products of each country’s history. Which is better? I’m not sure that I have sufficient wisdom to be certain about that, but there is something empowering about knowing that your vote counts and was counted in the final tally, no matter who you cast it for. And so, my take-away from this that might be of interest to some on this business-focussed platform? Always make sure that you understand your context and the detail of the systems that exist around you. Sometimes question those and push against them for change if you need to, but always ensure that you know how to work them for the outcome that you are trying to achieve. https://lnkd.in/d_QTha9X https://lnkd.in/dXxK8MbW https://lnkd.in/ditrKZCb
