From cool Virginia at the beginning of the week - to sunny (and cool) Colorado at the end! A great opportunity to participate in railcar impact testing at MxV Rail's Impact Track, located just outside of Pueblo, Colorado. The MxV Rail Impact Test Track takes advantage of precisely designed track with a 1.5% downhill grade. This allows for what is really a large-scale Inclined Impact test, where the MxV folks are able to precisely control the impact speed of the "test" car as it travels into what's called the anvil car string (100s of thousands of pounds). It's super-impressive to see, hear, and literally feel as the energy is transmitted through your body! My Lansmont colleagues Grant Badstubner and Amy Noack were there to provide on-site SAVER shock and vibration data recorder training, using the measured impact data as our basis. What a cool, valuable suite of services and expertise these folks at MxV - a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads - provide for the rail industry.

While this is not “cute” or “funny,” I’m genuinely appreciative of the transparency these incidents provide. It allows us to examine and showcase potential gaps in AI behavior, which is crucial for developing safeguards. This transparency is essential. Understanding what can go wrong with AI helps us focus on mitigation strategies that bring real-world value, protect our humanity, and enhance our capabilities. To move forward responsibly, we need models developed with safety and reliability as core principles—not just as experiments to test AI’s “fun” capabilities. Models built with these foundations are better suited to solve real-world challenges, positioning us to truly leverage AI’s potential for meaningful impact.
