Another interesting Photonics Hot List for the week, brought to you by Justine Murphy and LaserFocusWorld: A imager (see comments) and two laser reports; UK-based Directed Energy and a chip-scale Ti-Sapphire laser. 2nd story shows a research imaging device that provides VIS/NIR response, using TiO2 (titanium dioxide) and Sb2Se3 (antimony triselenide) for VIS and Sb2Se3 for NIR. Notably, Silicon's bandgap of 1.1eV puts the cut-off at ~1100nm. So, unfiltered CMOS will provide some NIR response. They say it's Nature/Salmon inspired. (I'd also like to note that China recently added Antimony to Germanium and Gallium to their export controls, which require licensing for purchases from certain nations.) https://lnkd.in/gHNGhcjr

With the rise of AI, photonic integrated circuits (PICs) built on various platforms such as SOI, LNOI, and SiN are gaining significant traction. While SOI has traditionally been the primary platform for PICs, the increasing demand for high-data-rate optical transceivers is driving further integration within SOI. This raises an interesting question: How will PICs evolve in the future? Will one platform dominate, or will multiple platforms coexist? One thing is certain: different applications will require different designs, and each platform brings its own unique capabilities to specific use cases. So, how large is the opportunity for PICs, particularly in AI? The PIC industry stands at a crossroads, where the rise of AI could unlock new opportunities, particularly for "underdog" applications in the automotive and medical markets. Yole's market and technology report on Silicon Photonics 2024 is now available. This comprehensive report offers in-depth scenario analysis, a detailed industrial landscape, and the latest market and technology trends shaping the future of PICs. If you're looking to stay ahead of the curve in the rapidly evolving world of photonics, this is a must-read! 🌐 Check it out now: https://lnkd.in/eEE97cPG #AI #Photonics #PICs #OpticalCommunication #Innovation

"Effects of Bumper Integration on Low-, Mid-, and High-Resolution Imaging Radars" - an important topic in the automotive community, which i had the pleasure of presenting and discussing at EuCAP in Glasgow last month. Of particular interest in the antenna community was our broadband microstrip patch antenna, which is designed to operate in the entire 79 GHz frequency band for automotive radar, as originally presented in our open access journal publication on my 1728 channel high-resolution 4D imaging radar. The links to both publications are in the comments, enjoy reading! Matthias Linder, Ron Riekenbrauck, Robin Bord, Institut für Mikrowellentechnik, Universität Ulm

Check out this awesome series of bite sized videos explaining CIS (CMOS Image Sensor) technologies by Galaxycore Inc. Creating a digital image from photons, converting them to electrons which then in turn can be used to retrieve the image takes a lot. Not even thinking of all the artifacts that have to be considered ;-) https://lnkd.in/eZcAHSvB
