🔍 CSO Mitigation, Wet Weather Flows, and Regulatory Compliance: A Look into Fitchburg’s Collection System Separation/Rehabilitation Plan Weston & Sampson's Frank E. Occhipinti, PE, PE, and Christopher P. Mackin, PE, PE, detail Fitchburg's efforts to tackle Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) discharges in this issue of the New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA) Journal. The city’s comprehensive plan includes sewer separation projects and wastewater treatment facility upgrades to meet regulatory compliance by 2030. These efforts aim to reduce untreated discharges during wet weather events, improving water quality in the North Nashua River. Between 1999 and 2018, the city successfully completed several projects, removing over 10 miles of combined sewers and closing 47 CSO regulators. With over $82 million invested so far, Fitchburg’s ongoing efforts, supported by funding programs like the State Revolving Fund and MVP, will continue through 2030.
