Last week Césaré Cejas, PhD attended the TechBio Innovators Meeting in Cambridge and got to hear some great insights in the fireside chat between Aline Charpentier, Head of Innovation for Bruntwood SciTech and Jason Jones head of Global Business Development at Cellular Origins. With a focus on what the convergence of engineering, robotics, data science and cellular biology can bring to the delivery of cell therapy to patients, needless to say it was exactly on topic for us at MFX. ⬇ our key take homes ⬇ 👉 A big challenge of manufacturing is scalability. Current conventional systems work but are not wholly adapted for optimised manufacturing at large scale. The same is true at the other end of the scale - often the shift from process development (PD) tools using a different system means that further PD is needed for the manufacturing system - which adds significant cost. 👉 Automation of certain if not the majority of operations in end-to-end processes is key to cut-down manufacturing times and reduce bottlenecks. However, key bioprocessing experts are still needed to gatekeep and make critical go/no-go decisions on data. 👉 By setting up regionalised manufacturing centres, it makes the therapy more accessible. There is still a case to be assessed if local manufacturing centres are actually needed next to hospitals. 👉 Cell therapy manufacturing, like most aspects of biotech & pharma, use loads of single-use plastic consumables, so in terms of ESG targets, one can view this from the perspective of COGS. Through automation, there’s reduction in clean room space usage (and thus reduction in energy usage). Making processes more streamlined helps reduce waste. 👉 New automated innovation in cell therapy PD and manufacturing still requires validation to ensure accuracy, such that the machine read-out is on the standard of a bioprocessing expert.
