🏅 INTERNATIONAL SPORT EVENTS IN EUROPE 🏅 🌍 This month, we lead an EASE Talk study on the international sport events organized in each European country since 2015. In order to do an overwiew, we need some data on the subject. You can therefore answer this Form about sport events in your country. 🗒 Your answers will provide us with valuable information on the number of events organized in each EU Member State (1), the mindset of public authorities and the public towards these events (2), and the priorities put forward by the organizers (3). 📆 We have chosen to carry out a 10-year analysis, and the questionnaire is therefore divided into two parts: 2015-2019 and 2020-2024, bearing in mind that the health crisis has profoundly disrupted the organization of competitions in the 2020 decade. IMPORTANT: For the best possible analysis of "international sporting event", we have selected two criteria: 1. Worldwide, European or international scope 2. An event that is not organized everytime by the same country. For example, in cycling, the Tour de France or the Giro d'Italia do not count, as they are held every year in France and Italy. On the other hand, the UCI Cycling World Championships count because they take place every year in a different country. This second criterion is very important, because it allows us to take into account the willingness of each country to organize events. 🖊 Please return it to us by Tuesday 16 April so that we can use it for our study, which will be published the following week. Earlier this week I wrote a post for The Cycling Podcast's Substack, The 11.01 Cappuccino, titled Sponsorship Makes The Wheels Go Round. Regular listeners may have noticed that since our sponsorship deal with Supersapiens expired just before the 2023 Giro d’Italia, The Cycling Podcast has been without a title sponsor – the equivalent of a WorldTour team riding in plain jerseys. Beautiful MAAP-made jerseys, of course, but without a logo in the prime position, so to speak. We've been very fortunate that the legacy of previous long-term partnerships with the likes of Rapha, Science In Sport, iwoca, Supersapiens and MAAP gave us stable foundations and enabled us to weather a difficult couple of years, not just for The Cycling Podcast but in the broader cycling and especially cycling media industries. We have seen the podcast market change with big players backed by massive media companies now dominating the charts – although we still more than hold our own – and the conclusion we have come to is that lots of potential opportunities are slipping by while we wait for a longer-term sponsor. The market has changed and so we are changing with it. As a result, we have divided The Cycling Podcast’s year into what we hope will be appealing blocks of episodes covering different parts of the season, with sponsorship packages to suit different objectives and budgets. Our on-the-ground coverage of the three men’s grand tours and the women’s Tour de France Femmes are our flagship packages, of course, but there are also packages covering the early season, the spring Classics and the end-of-season episodes. We’ve particularly recognised that the end-of-season package might appeal to companies who have marketing objectives focusing on Black Friday and Christmas, for example. So, for the first time in almost three years we are actively looking for companies that would like to reach our large, engaged audience of passionate cycling fans, benefit from being associated with one of the longest-running independent sports podcasts in Britain, and enable The Cycling Podcast to report from the heart of the world’s biggest races. I want to give a shout out today to Phil Dumontet and the team at Brooksee Events. I first connected with Phil when he was new to the Endurance Sports Race/Event Business a few years back and starting up the Boulderthon (Boulder, CO's in-house marathon). Right away I could tell that Phil was a breath of fresh air in this business and prepared to do things VERY differently. Phil was prepared to take a different angle and look, to almost every aspect of Races/Events - but particularly how he positioned races/events, for Sponsors and Partners. And it's showed up in the results in terms of the Sponsors and Partners he has landed for the Boulderthon. In the interim he has also moved into a management role at Booksee and word today that I am sharing, I believe is an Industry first - a Presenting Sponsor Partnership for the Brooksee debut Las Vegas Marathon, with Amazon! Congratulations, Phil and Team! I know that selling Sponsors is hard and challenging, but for the mid to larger sized races/events in Endurance Sports, if they REALLY want to thrive, they need to look beyond the box and beyond the usual suspects, that get pitched for partnership and sponsorship. That's where the real wins may be! In a past life, I was an endurance sports event organizer - think marathons, bike races, 5Ks, etc. I was flawed in many ways but I put my heart into it. My final race was in 2021 - shortly after racing resumed after the pandemic wiped out the industry. I wanted to give it one last go before hanging it up so I could go out on my terms instead of having COVID force things. It was a bike race with a long history on a traditionally popular course. I got lucky in some ways because people were very eager and excited to race again. I put a lot of effort into marketing the event and despite a shitty weather forecast, we had 501 people preregistered and an even 100 women sign up. Both were all-time highs for a competitive road cycling race not named LOTOJA in the region. Last weekend, the race was held again with great weather and 119 people raced - including eight women. Again, I was a flawed race manager and made mistakes at every event. But to see an almost 75 percent decline in participation saddens me. I didn't receive a single email from the race organizers encouraging me to register, which is odd because I know for a fact that my name and email address is in the database of past participants. My point? Not sure. But maybe I need to start an endurance sports event marketing agency. I can promise results.

July was always my favorite month. In the UK it was Summer, long evenings, Wimbledon, the chance of some warm weather, school holidays and once every 4 years if England qualified the football World Cup which meant a couple of weeks entertainment before a penalty shootout. These days it might still be July for different reasons. Not the weather or holidays as it's Winter (ok Sydney Winters aren't too bad) but the Tour de France. I'm in awe of the physical feats, love the races within a race, the high mountains, the team strategy/tactics, the emotions, reminiscing on family holidays, triathlons. a year of studies in Besancon, the TV coverage and daily podcasts. Every morning I check cyclingnews.com for a the headlines and a segue into management consulting and recruitment struck me. When I wake up what I want to know is top line what's meaningful in terms of the stage and the overall race. Who won the stage (very important) and the impact on the various competitions (general classification normally but on other days perhaps the green jersey/sprints) and any major incidents. I also listen to a great podcast (thecyclingpodcast) that has a feature called "tale of the etape (stage)". This latter gives quite a lengthy blow by blow account of the days activity (who was in the breakaway, who led at variosu points in the race) and builds to the conclusion with who won and the impact on the race standings. In PiP interviews we have a case study based on a really life engagement. When candidates present their finding/conclusion we expect/hope for a a top down approach much like the cyclingnews (Google the pyramid principle) with a key point/conclusion and then 2-3 supporting arguments to back up the conclusion. In consulting terms I'd like a bit more data, how many seconds did he win by and what is his overall lead but as a TDF nerd I already have some context so this gives me all that I need for my first daily update. I would give them a pass mark. For TheCyclingPodcast - strong recap but it came through to me step by step over several minutes. But I don't have time or patience at 6am when I'm waiting for the coffee machine to warm up - I want the result (but being a cycling tragic will get the full story on my commute/dog walk). Gutted to see that the Trail Events Company have ceased trading this week. I ran two of their fantastic events this year (Lulworth and Brecon Ultra Marathons)! Like so many small events organisers they have struggled with rising costs and reducing number of participants! My local race organiser has really struggled with participant numbers since covid, although the number of people who run has been steadily increasing! Small race organiser like SMEs bring some much passion, innovation and variety to the scene! It's such a shame that many runners they are only interested in the appeal of a big brand! London had over 840,000 entries to the 2025 ballot for 54,000 spaces. For so many it's London or nothing! But a marathon is a marathon and a fantastic achievement for anyone who completes one! When you tell people you're running a marathon, the first thing they askis, are you doing London? Now London looks amazing and does so much to inspire others, but there areso many amazing marathons of different sizes up and down the country! We all too often complain when there is so little competition or choice for consumers but the market whether in business or running is limited as we've failed to support the alternative! I've seen it in a business too, big brands being selected due the appeal of their brand name, but as this week's IT outage shows, even big brands are fallable, or loose their appeal as Nike shares have recently shown. So, my call to action is whether your making a business decision or a personal choice, don't rule out the smaller organisation just for the appeal of a bigger brand, you might be surprised how awesome a small business can be! #BetterSupplyChains #smallbusiness
