With Thanksgiving just around the corner, Americans across the country are out buying their turkey and trimmings — but some of them will be spending more on their meal's centerpiece than others. To find out where in the US people are paying the most for a Thanksgiving turkey, FinanceBuzz analyzed prices in at least three grocery stores in each state and mapped the average costs. For reference, the average price of a 15-pound turkey across the US is $31.16. Turkeys are most expensive in Hawaii, where residents can expect to pay an average of $52.85 — almost 70 percent above the national average. Residents of Alaska, another non-mainland state, face the second-highest price ($44.85). California has pricier turkeys than anywhere else on the mainland, with a 15-pounder costing $39.85, on average. Connecticut, Montana and New Jersey are tied for the fourth-highest turkey price ($36.85). The country's cheapest turkeys are found in Oklahoma, where shoppers can get a 15-pound turkey for just $19.75, while Louisianans will spend an average of just $19.80.

A record 80 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more over Thanksgiving weekend, the majority (a record 71.7 million) by car. Millions more are expected to fly, including a record-breaking 3 million on Sunday alone. Over 80% of Americans will eat turkey, requiring an estimated 46 million birds to supply the feast. A recent survey suggests mashed potatoes, bread rolls, and pie will be standard fare; macaroni and cheese consumption is highly regionalized. A holiday meal for 10 will cost $58 on average, down 5% from last year and the lowest inflation-adjusted cost in the 39 years of the farmers' survey.
