Last week, members of the Every Hour Counts network showcased their expertise and deep commitment to out-of-school time (OST) systems at the National Summer Learning Association Summit in Washington, D.C.! ✨ Our very own Jessica Donner led a panel alongside Beth Tomlinson from the City of Philadelphia, Samantha Weiss from Collective for Youth, Omaha, and Ann Durham from Providence After School Alliance to share how our network members are strengthening citywide OST systems through collaboration. 🎤 Marcus Pope of Youthprise delivered an inspiring TED-style talk on the Summer Innovation Stage, exploring how partnering with youth can drive impactful system change. 💡 Chris Smith from Boston After School & Beyond contributed to a session on science-backed strategies for fostering developmental resilience through summer learning. 🎉 We also hosted a networking session to celebrate ways OST system builders advance summer learning. We’re proud to see our network leading the way in shaping a brighter future for OST programs and the youth they serve! #EveryHourCounts #SummerLearningSummit

Here’s one key takeaway that hit me and Gosia Jaros-White hard as we headed back home after attending the National Summer Learning Association Summit this week: there’s no time for despair or fear. The challenges our kids face are real, but so is our collective power to overcome them. Yup, it’s time to exercise radical collaboration. We must mobilize passionately, tearing down silos and working together to create a future where all kids—regardless of their circumstances—can thrive. The positive energy at the summit was undeniable. For three days leaders, educators, policymakers, and advocates came together with one mission: to ensure every child has access to learning, opportunities, and fun. When we collaborate boldly and with purpose, we can eliminate barriers and inspire lasting change. It starts with showing up, speaking out, and taking action for the kids who need us the most. Here’s how: https://lnkd.in/eWpnJ6KF

The vision was set, the energy was high, and yet what was planned to take weeks was dragging on for months. There wasn't time and space to get aligned, learn from each other, and create the next best version of the work. This was the challenge Devin Vodicka faced while serving as Superintendent of Vista Unified School District and looking to lead learner-centered change across 30 schools. A different approach was needed. Queue the concept of Guiding Coalitions, inspired by John Kotter’s Dual Operating Systems. These coalitions were about creating a backbone for change, connecting the dots between varied initiatives and ensuring alignment with overarching goals. From there, change accelerated and the district began seeing the transformation it always knew was possible. The best part of Guiding Coalitions is their replicability and adaptability to each unique community. They are a cornerstone to the transformational work we do with schools and districts across the country that are ready to center learners by design. Learn more: https://hubs.ly/Q02DPtVt0
