This video by Lawrence Lessig is a brilliant explanation of why representative democracy is broken and is as relevant today as 8 years ago when it was filmed! If we want to see action on climate, cost of living and other social and environmental issues, we need to first address the root cause of these failures, and this lies in the unequal voice that people have over policy decisions It's also a brilliant summary of why OurVoice was founded https://lnkd.in/e6Rqyf2

Join the #RSAUS Deliberation Gateway Network to explore how deliberately fostering relationships across society could help foster global peace and wiser policies In the realm of deliberative democracy, this commitment to #nonviolence assumes a crucial role. By prioritizing #dialogue and #empathy, #deliberativedemocracy ensures that every voice resonates in a peaceful and respectful environment. This approach safeguards discussions from escalating into confrontations, thereby facilitating #consensus based power shifts and the emergence of effective global policies and decisions. To be in Deep Democracy with a community requires that everyone is interdependent on one another. Interdependence is the essential connections between communities and nations, emphasizing that the welfare of one influences the global collective. This principle demands fair solutions to climate change, particularly championing the voices of marginalized and communities of the Global South who are disproportionately affected by environmental injustices. Interdependence encourages unified actions and approaches that are equitable, inclusive, and uphold the dignity of all communities. It’s a somber day for our nation. I’ve only learned or watched archive news footages of presidential assassinations and/or attempts of the past. But the recent attempt on a presidential candidate is a reminder of our nation’s fragility. We may disagree on policy issues and solutions, but we must recommit to active listening, finding common ground and compromise, and building consensus. Because a functioning democracy isn’t just about voting and representation. It is a bedrock of innovation, ideas, and industrial success. Each of us must do our part because our future depends on it.

Exploring this question from Everyday Democracy as I dive into a morning planning session on transportation today - "If we accepted our interdependence as a fact, what would that mean for how we define, practice and talk about democracy?" Sometimes asking the right question can be enough to pivot how we think about and plan engagement on community projects. Happy question-finding this week!
How can we transform democracy into something that works for everyday people, unified in liberatory values, and rooted in the understanding that our interdependence is the key not only to our survival but to our thriving? Our Interdependent Democracy Innovation Lab fosters ideation, collaboration, and experimentation to reimagine how we practice local governance to ensure our collective survival and build a culture of well-being.
