The paper discussed in the following video studies the optimal timing of the tie-breaker in a 2-player game where the players have the opportunity to invest effort in improving their chances of winning, and the winner is determined by a fair coin toss in case of a tie. We show that the optimal timing of the tie-breaker depends on the type of contest or sport. Specifically, if it is "easier" for the players to score in the match, it may be optimal to hold the tie-breaker after the match to maximize the sum of the efforts invested by both players. However, if it is sufficiently "harder" for the players to score in a match, it is optimal to hold the tie-breaker before the match, as that would lead to more overall effort. We present a simple model to demonstrate these findings and derive the equilibrium strategies and payoffs for both scenarios. Our results provide insights into the optimal timing of tie-breakers in 2-player games, with implications for sports tournaments and other competitive settings. https://lnkd.in/gqzFMf5z #economics

For my eighth opposition analysis game, I traveled to Shildon to watch top-of-the-league Redcar, who were in formidable form with 6 wins from 6. Knowing how strong they were, I invested a lot time on the pre-match analysis to prepare. Redcar were highly active on social media, sharing highlights, manager interviews, and match reports. This wealth of information allowed me to gather key insights before even watching them live. For example, I was able to identify their formation ahead of time, thanks to a manager interview where it was mentioned that Redcar usually start in a 3-5-2 formation but can switch to a 4-3-3 if the wingbacks are struggling to get involved in the game. Armed with this knowledge, I saved valuable time during the match by anticipating this change. As expected, they began the game in a 3-5-2 shape, and I was able to spot the switch to a 4-3-3 quickly when it came during the first half, having already prepared for it. Given Redcar’s high-quality players, I also focused on adding more detail to my report by identifying which foot their key players favored. This insight allowed me to provide my manager with additional tactical advice, such as which foot to force Redcar’s players onto, giving Guisborough a slight edge in preparing to face them. Guisborough managed to hold them to a 1-1 draw.

As a society, there are moments in time when there is a seismic shift, as well as less intense moments that allow for a different path to be taken. These moments come and go, and people often look back and reflect on what could have been, if only they had seen the opportunity and believed. Not buying Apple stock when it bottomed out Not choosing VCR over the BetaMax Not taking better care of a comic book collection in the attic Not investing in UBER Not accepting those Olympic Hockey tickets on 22 Feb 1980. We have a tendency to look back on these moments with regret or quiet reflection, perhaps even cursing our luck and trying to figure out who to blame. It's important to reflect on why we passed over things in the past and what would have changed the outcome for us. I bring these to your attention because I believe I have an idea and a way to execute that plan, but to execute that idea, I need financial backing. I only need it for six months, as that will allow me the time to gather the data needed to show, not tell what I am trying to build. But first, I require 2-7 minutes of your time to explain *tell* and *show* my plan in six months as I pay back the initial investment at a rate of up to 10X the investment and you can even draw up the safeguards you need in place for after that six month deadline I need funding to create my idea #PassionWillFuelUs. Will you look back on this moments with regret or quiet reflection? https://lnkd.in/gFzQEEE5

Have you heard of the Monty Hall problem? It’s a classic probability puzzle that challenges our intuition. Here's how the game works: You’re on a game show with three doors. Behind one door is a shiny new car (the prize!). Behind the other two are goats. You pick one door, let’s say Door 1. The host, who knows what’s behind each door, opens another door (e.g., Door 3) to reveal a goat. Now, the host asks: Do you want to stick with Door 1 or switch to Door 2? Does switch doors change your chance of winning?

I hear ALL THE TIME in the restaurant tech industry that the bigger and most successful companies are not the best - that they are not the ones putting out the best product and are not the ones best taking care of the customer. In the world of gaming, the same is often true. BUT, one of the most successful games of late, Baldur's Gate 3, was unexpectedly successful by not focusing on financial success as the end goal, but rather by focusing on making a truly great game that gamers want to play. The revenue followed. Listen to Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, talk about this inspiring recipe. What is the analogous recipe in restaurant tech that would see the right product emerge as an "unexpected" success? https://lnkd.in/ej7ie5xe
