🔎New research summary: Systematic review on school-based interventions for children and adolescent survivors of disasters to reduce PTSD. 🔑Key findings: Interventions most frequently used were psycho-education and cognitive behavioural therapy, often delivered by teachers. Authors found school-based post-disaster mental and psychosocial support efforts reduced PTSD symptoms. 📚 🎨It is uncertain but creative expression and body-oriented strategies may be beneficial, as well as interventions that involved physical exercise, art therapy and telling narrative stories, but were uncertain. 🌎Implications: Authors stated that in order to determine transferability of results to different contexts, cross-cultural research is needed. Unlocking Resilience: Understanding Childhood Trauma for Effective Intervention Understanding childhood trauma is pivotal in fostering resilience in children. According to the World Health Organization an estimated 1 billion children face maltreatment globally each year, encompassing neglect and abuse, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). However, the response to such experiences varies, with some children exhibiting resilience amidst adversity. Revolutionary scientific findings shed light on how different dimensions of adversity imprint unique signatures of trauma. For instance, Ethan and Kevin, pseudonyms for children studied by trauma educator Marc D. Hauser, underwent contrasting ordeals. Ethan endured abandonment and neglect in an Eastern European orphanage, while Kevin suffered through witnessing and experiencing domestic violence. These traumatic experiences manifested differently in Ethan and Kevin, impacting their emotional, social, and cognitive development. By identifying these unique traumatic signatures, caregivers and professionals can tailor interventions to foster resilience and facilitate healing, providing children with the best chance for recovery and future well-being. #trauma #psychotherapy #psychotherapist #childhoodtrauma #mentalhealth #youthmentalhealth https://lnkd.in/dEaWqwhK

Mental health issues are an epidemic—globally, access to care is hindered by challenges of affordability and availability. We are building a model that can make care accessible to all at Shamiri Institute. Our model is based on very simple but powerful ideas: centering care at the community level, task-shifting to nonprofessionals, embracing brief, simple, “low-touch” interventions that promote broader human functioning and well-being, and building a tiered care model that allows for upward referral to expert providers when necessary. Together with our friends and partners at Friendship Bench Zimbabwe (Dixon Chibanda) and StrongMinds (Sean Mayberry), we’ve served over 500,000 people in just the last two years for as little as $7 per year, achieving outcomes comparable to traditional therapy that costs more than $3,000 per year. Africa is leading the way, offering the rest of the world a new approach to tackling the mental health crisis. It’s time for the world to take notice. Thank you, Simar Bajaj for sharing this important work. https://lnkd.in/dPkCdNnD

About half of all mental disorders appear by age 14, and three-quarters by age 24. When left untreated, these conditions can negatively affect lives and livelihoods. That’s why early diagnosis and intervention are critical for adding years to life and life to years for millions of children and adolescents. As part of the McKinsey & Company Health Institute’s (MHI’s) Conversations on Health series, Erica Coe and Kana Enomoto, co leaders at MHI, discussed this challenge and how to prioritize the mental health needs of children and adolescents with Zeinab Hijazi, PsyD, the global lead on mental health at UNICEF.

As part of our #PurpleTuesday pledge to expand our knowledge and understanding of non-visible disabilities, we invite charities and advocates to present to our team. Over time, we will increase the range of non-visible conditions in our Invisible disabilities index.⠀ ⠀ We invited Rachel Bilski from the PTSD UK to help us learn more about PTSD and CPTSD. We learnt the following: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) 🌻 Resulting from a traumatic experience 🌻 Often misunderstood & misdiagnosed 🌻 Physical, mental and emotional symptoms We also learnt that 70% of people with PTSD don’t receive professional help. However, evidence shows that with the correct treatment, recovery is possible. Please visit PTSD UK for advice and support. 🌟🎙️ The Sunflower Conversations podcast provides a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of PTSD and CPTSD, visit the link in our bio⠀ 🎙️ PTSD & CPTSD with Rachel Bilski, PTSD UK https://bit.ly/3RuDRKN 🎙️ PTSD with Darren Carew https://bit.ly/3vEWEGl 🎙️ PTSD with Danielle Allen https://bit.ly/3RuDRKN ALT: 1.
