𝗗𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) “chatbot” that can understand and generate human language, steals most headlines related to AI along with the rising concerns about using AI tools to create false “deepfake” images, audio and video that appear convincingly real. But scientific applications of AI and other computational biology methods are gaining a greater share of the spotlight as research teams successfully employ these techniques to make new discoveries such as predicting how patients will respond to cancer drugs. AI and computational biology have proven to be boons to scientists searching for patterns in massive datasets, but some researchers are raising alarms about how AI and other computational tools are developed and used. “I see a misconception where some people think that AI is so intelligent that you can just throw data at an AI model and it will figure it all out by itself,” says Andrei Osterman, PhD, vice dean and associate dean of curriculum for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and professor in the Immunity and Pathogenesis Program at Sanford Burnham Prebys. “In many cases, it's not that simple.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3SRrbhJ #artificialintelligence #computationalbiology #chatgpt #data

Reflection on AI talk by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johari Abdullah The talk by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johari Abdullah on November 13, 2024, was an insightful session about the significance of AI tools in education and university settings. It highlighted the potential of AI to enhance productivity, support academic tasks, and foster efficiency. Through examples such as ChatGPT, NotebookLM, and Suno, Dr. Johari emphasized how these tools can assist in note-taking, individual work, and group assignments, enabling students to generate ideas and streamline their workflow. The discussion on the pros and cons of AI was particularly enlightening. On the positive side, AI does reduces costs, improves efficiency, and supports creativity in some specific contexts. However, Dr. Johari also warned about its drawbacks, such as a potential decline in creativity, emotional disconnect, and the risk of fostering laziness among its users. These insights were important in understanding AI's dual-edged nature. Overall, the session deepened my understanding of AI's role in academic and inspired me to use AI tools thoughtfully. It also underscored the importance of balancing efficiency with critical thinking and creativity to maximize the benefits while minimizing the risks associated with AI technologies.

💡 Four Things We Learned from #AI Winning the #Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry 💡 The 2024 #Nobel Prize in Physics made headlines for awarding Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield, two pioneers of #AI. The 2024 #Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to two scientists at #Google #Deepmind, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper (who led the development of the company’s AI model, #Alphafold), and Prof David Baker of the University of Washington. Here’s what these historic wins tell us about AI's future: 1. AI is now Nobel-worthy It may seem like a stretch, but AI essentially won a Nobel Prize. Hinton and Hopfield’s work on #neural #networks, key for modern AI, has made the development of facial recognition solutions and tools like #ChatGPT possible. Hassabis, Jumper and Baker share the chemistry prize for “computational protein design and protein structure prediction”. Through the use of Alphafold in research, it’s been used in applications such as understanding antibiotic resistance and developing enzymes that can decompose plastic. 2. The "Godfather of AI" uses ChatGPT Geoffrey Hinton, the "Godfather of AI," isn't just an innovator, he’s also a user. He mentioned in multiple interviews that he actually often uses ChatGPT, a tool powered by the neural networks he helped create. However, he acknowledges its current limitations, knowing it doesn't always get things right. 3. AI could outsmart humans Hinton has sounded the alarm on AI’s potential to surpass human intelligence within 5 to 20 years. He warns that machines could become smarter than us. 4. AI’s potential for scientific discovery Hassabis says that Alphafold should be seen as proof of AI’s potential for accelerating scientific discovery. He believes AI has the potential to benefit society, but like Hinton, he cautions us about AI’s uses and says it carries risks as well. While 1 and 2 are definitely interesting and tell us about the technology world we live in right now, numbers 3 and 4 are a call for all technology leaders to take responsibility to ensure that AI is developed ethically, prioritizing human well-being above all else. This includes applying principles of transparency, inclusivity, fairness, safety, security and sustainability. I am ready and committed to do my part.

Do you remember nanotechnology? It was going to change the world. Nanobots were/are going to invade the body to perform controlled interventions to cure disease. What about the human genome project? Going to change healthcare for ever. Stem cells? Robots? The internet? As humans we so desperately want to feel that we are evolving and we do this by grasping, not at straws per se, but new ideas and fashions. Now we are at a stage where AI "Artificial" Intelligence is cropping up everywhere with great excitement and fear being expressed in equal measures. So much for hope and hype. AI is not new and it has been through cycles of boom and bust in its long history. Yes, I do have great hopes for AI when used intelligently by good people. The dangers are not in AI itself but when it is used by bad people. Think guns in the USA. My personal journey with AI began in 1984. A story for another day but it has left me with great respect for the potential of AI but also a healthy skepticism for the claims of those who are embedded too deeply in the myths rather than the magic of current AI. In this first, in a series of blog posts on our journal website I look at an interaction with a sophisticated chatbot, ChatGPT. Has insight been programmed into the program? Yes I think so.
