Incredible article from The AbleGamers Charity highlighting the benefits and research that demonstrate the benefits of gaming and technology use and how it can enhance the lives of people with disabilities. "In fact, 38% of gamers in the United States are between the ages of 18 and 34, proving that video games are for everyone. But what about the misconception that video games are simply a waste of time? Well, there are actually many benefits of video games for those who play them. We know that video games are not a waste of time as 84% of gamers around the world report that video games help them connect with other people that share similar interests. Additionally, video games have proven to help gamers discover new interests, learn about interesting topics, and even learn more about themselves." https://lnkd.in/gXXmHpsX Unified Esports League #idd #tech #gaming #esports

All games should be disability inclusive or universally designed . That’s why “Mattel is making its colorful card games, like Uno, accessible to players with color blindness. For Uno, that means cards will have symbols in addition to colors and numbers (square for blue, circle for red, diamond for yellow, and triangle for green) so players can tell which color the card is without actually seeing the color itself. It will extend to other games in their portfolio so the 300 million people worldwide with colour blindness can play.” #InclusiveGames #DisabilityInclusion #Games #AdaptiveSport #Diversity #Equity #Disability #GameForAll

🌐 In support of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we are very excited to now certify playAbility software for Blacknut! 🎮 Games are for everyone but accessing games can be difficult. While cloud gaming allows to remove the hardware barrier to entry, we wanted to make sure we could address ALL players, including people with #disabilities, by working with #playAbility. By making games accessible, we want to ensure that all players, regardless of their abilities, can have a great gaming experience! https://lnkd.in/e6EKgqrJ #cloudgaming #playAbility #accessibility #disability #innovation #inclusion #AccessibilityMatters #blacknut #gaming

100+ hours in a game, then they move on. What's next? Running Canberra's first gaming disability service has taught me a lot about gamer behavior. When I started, I thought there were only a few popular game categories. Turns out, I was wrong. With 40 people on our Discord, I've seen that every gamer has unique interests. No one sticks to the same game for long. They invest 100-150 hours into a game, then move on. This makes finding friends with similar gaming interests challenging. But I've noticed a pattern: - Role-playing games (RPGs) are the most popular. - Adventure games come next. - Other categories mix in after that. Multiplayer games, however, offer a solution. They provide a space where gamers can always find others to play with, regardless of their game preferences. So, what's the takeaway? Understanding these patterns helps us create better, more inclusive gaming experiences for everyone. Gaming is an increasingly popular hobby and has the potential to be an inclusive way for people with disabilities to connect and forge strong friendships. Making the experience more accessible for gamers starts with small adjustments, like increasing font size. There are major strides being made in the gaming industry right now. In 2020, the release of the game The Last of Us Part II came with over 60 different accessibility options, allowing individuals with a wide range of disabilities to be able to experience and immerse themselves into the game. From extra visual cues to button customization options, the doors were being opened to a range of individuals who have historically been left out. Ross Minor, an accessibility consultant who experiences blindness shared his experience with the game. "I'm not an emotional person, but, like, it literally brought tears to my eyes 'cause something like this was never done before." In December 2022, Easterseals launched ES Gaming, which exists to create a new standard for equity, inclusion, and access among gamers with disabilities. By amplifying voices and accessible innovations, ES Gaming strives to create a more inclusive space in an ever-evolving industry.
