Intellectual Property (IP) is the engine of growth for your business. The catch - your IP strategy needs to be aligned with your business objectives. Last Friday, I attended LES Singapore's first in-person event of 2024, where Sonja London shared practical insights into harmonising IP strategies and business goals. Having previously collaborated with Sonja as co-chairs of the Licensing Executives Society International (LESI) High Technology Committee, I'm thrilled to witness her upcoming appointment as President of LESI - a role that reflects her profound expertise and leadership in the field. One of the key takeaways from the event was the importance of leveraging an ecosystem for success. In Sonja's words - no man (company) is an island. An effective IP strategy demands more than just managing your IP and intangible asset portfolio. It requires, among others, active monitoring of competitor, technology, and regulatory landscapes, as well as engaging stakeholders to understand market needs. Often, this involves collaborating with external partners who bring specialised expertise to the table. Special thanks to Lionel Tan and Licensing Executives Society (Singapore) for providing platforms like these that facilitate connections among experts within the ecosystem. The Final Conference of the "Establishment of Rectors Conference in Azerbaijan (ECAR)" project ECAR project, coordinated by Baku Business University and ultimate goal of this project is to endorse strong networking and cooperation among national universities and decision-makers through the establishment of the Rectors Conference. How interesting! With some old (retired) and new (active) colleagues, I am working on a publication on the Lisbon Recognition Convention (LRC): how it came about, what new ideas and energy it brought, how its surroundings have changed - both in Europe and beyond. We devoted one section to "automatic recognition" which in the Bologna process and LRC context refers to a general recognition of a degree as "bachelor" or "master" etc at HE system level, without precluding a more specific assessment for admission to specific activities. In a meeting of the Advisory Council of the MODUS project of i.a. the German Rector's Conference (HRK), I learned that the the European Commission uses the term "Automatic Recognition" in quite a different mode: it pertains - in Erasmus+ supported credit mobility - to the obligation of the home university to automatically recognise all study point that will have been achieved in conformity with the "Learning Agreement". Both make sense, but it can be confusing when the same term is used for different concept. I can't resist remarking that I actually coined the term "Automatic Recognition" in 1994 for the Malta coneference of the Council of Europe 🙂. In act, I attached yet another meaning to it back then - those interested can ask me what that was 😉.
