Rotary engines, with their compact size and high power-to-weight ratio play a crucial role in #UAV and #Hybrid vehicle applications where lightweight propulsion systems are essential. Taking rotary engines to the next level with improved efficiency and reduced emissions requires detailed design simulation. Modelling a rotary engine in 1D CFD simulations to maximise efficiency, presents unique challenges due to its distinct design and operation compared conventional reciprocating engines. The new 2024.2 release of #WAVE introduces a dedicated Wankel volume element which replaces the need to represent the engine as three multiple reciprocating cylinders by using the original rotary engine parameters without any extra calculations. I love CFD! Check out this incredible simulation performed by Convergent Science engineers Nitesh and Angela! Here we're modeling a drone extinguishing a pool fire using CONVERGE. This uses all the cool features, including autonomous meshing, AMR, the SAGE detailed chemistry solver, VOF modeling, and Lagrangian particle tracking. The combination of the water droplets and the wind from the drone rotors extinguishes the fire. Could this be the future of firefighting? #cfd #convergecfd

Need to get the bigger picture? The #Leica P50 with a range of 1,000 m and 1 million points per second while maintaining 1.2mm accuracy per scan is still a power house of scanners even after 6 years. While this makes for a great photo, at the height of 280m and with everything locked, there was still movement that made data capture challenging. This project even involved taking the scanner up and climbing the 280' ladder to ensure we got the right data, the first time. A professional drone company was unable to successfully complete the capture so the pressure was on and, 3DS Technologies delivered as promised. #windpower #3dstechnologies #Leicageosystems

🎬Composites in Action🎬 Look at this morphing CFRP aerofoil with highly controllable aerodynamic performance! 👀 Researchers from the University of Manchester Rui Wu, Costas Soutis, Shan Zhong and Antonio Filippone have developed a morphing carbon fiber composite aerofoil concept with an active trailing edge! This aerofoil features of camber morphing with multiple degrees of freedom. The shape morphing is enabled by an innovative structure driven by an electrical actuation system that uses linear ultrasonic motors (LUSM) with compliant runners, enabling a full control of multiple degrees of freedom. The compliant runners also serve as structural components that carry the aerodynamic load and maintain a smooth skin curvature. The morphing structure with compliant truss is shown to exhibit a satisfactory flexibility and loading capacity in both numerical simulations and static loading tests. This design is capable of providing a pitching moment control independent of lift and higher L/D ratios within a wider range of angle of attack. Such multiple morphing configurations could expand the flight envelope of future unmanned aerial 2 vehicles. A small prototype was built to illustrate the concept but as no off-the-shelf LUSMs can be integrated into this bench top model, two servos are employed as actuators providing two controlled degrees of freedom. Short summary video of our #ICRA 2024 paper on "An Online Self-calibrating Refractive Camera Model with Application to Underwater Odometry". The work delivers a refractive camera model enabling to start from calibration in air and estimate the further lens distortion due to refraction, while also applying it in the context of visual-inertial odometry. Dataset released and code soon to be released! Abstract: This work presents a camera model for refractive media such as water and its application in underwater visual-inertial odometry. The model is self-calibrating in real-time and is free of known correspondences or calibration targets. It is separable as a distortion model (dependent on refractive index n and radial pixel coordinate) and a virtual pinhole model (as a function of n). We derive the self-calibration formulation leveraging epipolar constraints to estimate the refractive index and subsequently correct for distortion. Through experimental studies using an underwater robot integrating cameras and inertial sensing, the model is validated regarding the accurate estimation of the refractive index and its benefits for robust odometry estimation in an extended envelope of conditions. Lastly, we show the transition between media and the estimation of the varying refractive index online, thus allowing computer vision tasks across refractive media. https://lnkd.in/dpUrVgRJ #robotics #underwater #autonomy
