My friends, colleagues and clients all know that I'm not easily impressed - not least because I'm always trying to think through the implications of what I learn along the way and dig deeper into what this means for business, governments etc.
With that as a disclaimer, I've been exploring the usefulness (or otherwise) of Perplexity.ai over the last couple of weeks, thanks to a free trial from LinkedIn. For a bit of fun, I asked it to pen a 200-word summary of my book, 'The Long Term Starts Tomorrow', which I wrote just over a decade ago thanks in part to the inspiration of a short course at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) led by Jorgen Randers - and in part to the encouragement of Cassandra Kelly AM to sit down and finish it!
Here's what it produced:
"Nigel Lake's book 'The Long Term Starts Tomorrow' explores how businesses can make short-term decisions that stand the test of time in a rapidly changing world. The book addresses the challenges of balancing immediate needs with long-term goals, both in business and government.
Lake argues that traditional approaches to strategy and decision-making are often inadequate in today's fast-paced environment. He provides a framework for identifying opportunities and assessing risks, emphasizing the importance of long-term thinking in creating value.
The book covers topics such as:
- How to spot major opportunities that others might miss
- Identifying inflection points that could transform an organization
- Understanding the risks of short-term strategies in a long-term context
- Applying systems thinking to business and strategy
Lake draws on his extensive experience advising hundreds of major companies and governments on M&A transactions, strategic transformations, and large infrastructure projects. He combines insights from finance, science, and systems thinking to offer a fresh perspective on navigating change and creating lasting value."The Long Term Starts Tomorrow" aims to inspire leaders to marry long-term vision with near-term action, providing practical tools and frameworks for more effective decision-making in an uncertain world."
Don't thinmk I could have put it better myself

2wI look forward to jumping into this dynamic in class; a variable in the behavior is the tone, tenner, and accuracy of the communication from the inception, which would be a big part of the decision.
