This week, the Secretary and our Commissioners wanted to lift up things they are grateful for. Commissioner Ortega of the MA Department of Higher Education is grateful that he met Sean, a student from one of the UMass campuses, who lifted up the importance of food security at our colleges and universities! 🍎🏫

There are only 8 days left to participate in the CU Food Fight! Supporting campus food pantries does not just help students to eat a meal, it is part of a much larger picture that our country is facing food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined by the US Department of Agriculture as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active & healthy lifestyle. This crisis significantly affects college students across America and is a real issue many today have to face. We all know college kids are known for eating ramen noodles, and heck, we have all likely been there too! But this is something we now have the power and knowledge to change. Food insecurity can end up affecting students' studies, relationships, habits, and routines while in school, and can even have lasting effects post-grad. The real reason these students are here is to learn, so let's help them persevere through their studies without worrying about what they will eat for dinner. Just visit https://brnw.ch/21wP0hC to support Clyde's Cupboard at UCCS and fight hunger! #UCCSAlumni #CUFoodFight

Another important factor to consider is the nutritional injury that comes along with food insecurity. We know that food quality impacts our mental health and emotional well-being. So, there must be more responsibility toward addressing the structural factors that prevent others from having food security. There must be more attention and empirical evidence to explore further food insecurity in higher education (please consider graduate and professional students as well).
Food insecurity among college students is a significant issue, with one in three students affected, much higher than the national average of one in ten households. Matthew J. Landry, PhD, RDN, DipACLM, FAND, FAHA, along with nine colleagues, has published a call-to-action in the Journal of American College Health, urging university administrators to allocate resources and support to address this issue. They emphasize the need for fostering an equitable campus culture and advocating for supportive policies at state and federal levels. Addressing food insecurity is essential for student health, well-being, and academic success. 🦃 It’s Thanksgiving week, but many college students won’t be sitting down to a big meal. ➡️ Did you know that about 35% of college students face food insecurity? That’s according to the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice’s 2019 survey of over 80,000 students, but those numbers may be even higher post-COVID when the Center releases its latest study conducted in 2023. Among those student respondents who reported low or very low food insecurity, 23% were undergraduates, and 12% were graduate students. Of those students reporting food insecurity, 23% were attending community college. 📒 That’s a lot of students who may be worrying about where their next meal is coming from and not about when their next exam is being held. Next month, we’ll examine how food insecurity directly impacts academic performance. #droppingthefork #foodinsecurityexpert #foodinsecurity #collegestudents #toohungrytolearn #advocateforpolicychange
