📗 South Korea 5G mmWave Band Auction and Cancellation Story📗 💡On April 3rd, 2019, #South_Korea became the first country in the world to launch a nationwide #5G network and commercialize 5G services. 💡 The three operators (KT, LGUPlus, and SK Telekom) secured spectrum in 3.5 MHz (mid-band) and 28 MHz (high-band) categories through the auction process. 💡The Government allocated a total of #280 MHz in the 3.5 GHz spectrum band. 💡In 2018, South Korea was the first country to auction 5G #mmWave spectrum for mobile services, each MNO won #800MHz of 28GHz spectrum. 💡 Under the license conditions, operators were required to build 22,500 base stations, meeting 15% of the target after 3 years and 30% after 5 years.  💡In November 2022, #KT_Corp and #LG_Uplus failed to satisfy the deployment requirements and both operators lost rights to the 28GHz spectrum, while #SK_Telecom had its license reduced. 💡 SK Telecom was required to meet the 15,000 base station roll-out target by 31 May 2023 but failed to meet this target and its license was canceled 💡At the end of January 2024, #StageX, established by the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) and Kakao affiliate Stage Five, officially became Korea’s fourth mobile carrier after securing the bid for the 5G 28 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum. 💡 The conditions of the new auction were much less stringent than the 2018 auction as winning operators are required to build a total of 6000 28GHz base stations on a national basis in the first 3 years. 📃 Conclusion: The main challenge for 5G mmWave was the lack of compatible devices which needs more pressure and work with manufacturers like what is happening in #US and poor indoor coverage due to the issue of bad penetration. 📸 CAICT #5G #Spectrum #mmWave
