Ahmad Anas Alkezbari, research associate at the Chair of Automotive Drives at Universität der Bundeswehr München and part of our team at MORE, is giving us some insights into his research activities on the development of a new ignition spark model: “The combustion characteristics of a spark-ignited engine is significantly affected by ignition and the simulation models must appropriately capture this feature. Developing novel engine concepts, such as hydrogen engines that operate at ultra-lean or engines that use pre-chamber spark plugs, requires a thorough comprehension of the ignition phenomenon in order to enhance simulation models and achieve reliable ignition.” Several experiments on the topic were conducted in association with the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences. MORE on Tour🌎 We are glad to share that one of our research papers titled “Advancements in Combustion Modeling and Simulation for an Innovative Homogenous Reactivity-Controlled Compression Ignition (hRCCI) Concept” was presented at the SAE International WCX 2024 conference in Detroit, USA. The paper was published by our research associates Larissa Michaela Grundl and Pravin Kumar Sundaram and shares the innovative simulation concepts for studying the hRCCI combustion concept. The dual fuel engine with environmentally friendly oxygenated fuels provides challenges with regards to simulation and combustion prediction. Most of the 0D combustion models deal with conventional combustion process and with respect to CFD simulations, multiple turbulence solving methods are available providing varying simulation accuracies and simulation duration. The paper discusses about the 0D combustion simulation using tabulated chemistry for predicting the combustion characteristics and additionally compares the various turbulence solving methods like LES, PANS and URANS and its effect over the 2D CFD simulation of the hRCCI concept. These results help us develop cleaner and more efficient engines for our phlegmatized serial hybrid powertrain. Great to see a strong Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District contingent from Sheffield and Rotherham at this Aerospace Technology Institute event. Warwick Spearing from Technicut Limited represents a truly cutting edge precision engineering business that was the founding partner of the AMRC along with Boeing and remains one of the true aerospace innovators. Given the prominence of robotics and automation in this space, its super to see the fast growing Rivelin Robotics taking centre stage during the day. Tempted to move the business to San Diego following broken promises in their home city, its great to see Rivelin stuck it out and chose the grit over the surf and are now planning to on-shore production from Europe to one of the heartlands of Yorkshire manufacturing: Neepsend. Robert J Bush's passion for the place is tangible as was demonstrated at the recent The Bessemer Society dinner held very close to Neepsend by chance. Also good to see Professor Harry Burroughes -- one of the AMRC's rapidly growing number of Professors, including Melissa Conlan and Ben Morgan) who will doubtless be talking about the £50 million publicly funded COMPASS project along with industry partner Loop Technology Ltd. Let's hope the comms and marketing folk at Sheffield City Council and The University of Sheffield( the former stumped up £7million of ratepayers money to help build a new extension to the The University of Sheffield flagship Factory 2050, while the £740 million turnover university coughed up just £3 million according to AMRC insiders). Then there's the good people at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority who also chipped in £7 million of public money to help build the R&D extension for the university. Post Investment Zone, it seems the baton for growing and promoting AMID has been passed to Oliver Coppard who has been leading the way in giving it the high prominence it deserves... But Oliver cant do it on his own. What is needed now is a coordinated campaign to put the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District centre stage, rather than either trying to erase it, ignore it, or talk only about one’s own little part in it ...for example the University of Sheffield Innovation District which is a small, now gated, campus of four buildings, often unoccupied according to locals and impossible to access without permission. Which is far cry from the founders' idea for Factory 2050 as a largely open access facility that would attract young people to press their faces against the glass rotunda to marvel at what modern manufacturing looks like and want to be part of it,
