The GMDN AGENCY (Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency) alongside several partners including Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust have today announced a six-month discovery phase funding award from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, to research improvements in capturing post-market medical device intelligence to improve patient safety within the UK. The project partners are King's College London, GS1 UK, UCL, the GMDN Agency, Radar Healthcare, PANORAMIC DIGITAL HEALTH and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. John Wilkinson OBE, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency, and former Director of devices at MHRA, said: “There is an opportunity for post-market-intelligence to provide much earlier warnings about devices that are not operating as they should, are difficult to use, unreliable, or seem to function poorly in sub-groups of patients. This data could be used by hospitals to better manage their services to patients and have greater confidence in deploying innovative devices in their services. Manufacturers could use data to rapidly detect and address any identified issues with their devices. Regulators could provide pathways that enable innovative devices to get to patients more quickly, by changing the balance of pre-market and post-market safety and performance evaluation." The future of endoscopy is here! There is a new invention by Pillbot, a swallowable pill containing a wireless camera that can livestream the inside of your body. During a TED talk, co-founder Alex Luebke swallowed the pill live on stage, demonstrating its potential to give physicians a real-time view of a patient's insides. This could revolutionise the way we diagnose and treat a variety of conditions. The pill is still under development, but the initial results are promising. #medicine #technology #healthcare Capsule endoscopy: What to expect, results, and more (medicalnewstoday.com)

I just signed up on the weekend, and already have access to medical images and reports from a couple of local hospitals and imaging centers! Patients visiting WDMH for tests such as an x-ray, mammogram or CT Scan can now access their medical imaging and reports online. This new technology eliminates the need to use CD-ROMs to share medical imaging with patients or referring physicians. This is a free service offered through PocketHealth (although there is a paid component to get more services). PocketHealth improves access to your records, allowing you to be active partners in your care (or that of a loved one). Plus, staff spend less time on administrative tasks, improving the overall healthcare experience. Instead of returning to the hospital for a CD every time they want their medical images to share or for their personal records, you can enrol at pockethealth.com/WDMH; once the records are available for viewing, you receive an email from PocketHealth with a secure link to access, store and share your images, all in one place.
