Thanks to Sustainability Leaders United for sharing my thoughts on Community-Based Tourism in #urban environments. When I started working in the SLUMS of Rio de Janeiro I realised that - beyond the stigma and the misrepresentations - there were many misconceptions about tourism, especially if we consider that form of tourism owned, managed and delivered by the community itself for its benefit, that I refer to as Community-Based Tourism or CBT. People simply could not believe that it was possible to have CBT in slums. I always loved challenges, and, back in 2007, I thought that my field research could have a positive impact on the real life of those urban communities if someone was bold enough to share the real stories. That's why I dedicated my Master's Dissertation of my Brazilian course of studies to exploring the matter (now a book published on Amazon, only in portuguese, unfortunately, though >> https://lnkd.in/dhMqawqX) I believe that it is quite restrictive to think that CBT is only possible in rural areas of the so-called 'developed country' (a term which I have never been keen to use for the controversy that the concept "development" carries, but that it is another story) or 'global South'. I met great and successful CBT projects in SEVERAL urban environments.
