Delighted to announce that Scotland’s Railway and our supply chain partners have been shortlisted for three categories at this years Ground Engineering awards, bettering our two from last year. Each are fabulous in their own way, however all share a common theme, demostrating the power of true collaboration and commitment, harnessing the skills and experience of the teams to help deliver Scotland’s Railway strategic priorities. They highlight our need to continually improve our knowledge about climate change, specifically the increase frequency of severe weather events impacting our railway and to find new ways to mitigate and address matters enabling us to deliver a safe and reliable rail service for Scotland. Wishing each the very best. Health and Safety Award - Network Rail Scotland - Weather Operations The Weather Operations Delivery Manager role is a “industry first” in UK railway operations and they provide expert advice and monitoring of Scotland’s Weather from dedicated operational meteorologists rostered 24/7, 365 days of the year in Scotland’s Route Control. https://lnkd.in/gyQ3pwjs UK Geotechnical Team of the Year - Scotland's Railway Emergency Response Network Rail Works Delivery along with Network Rail Asset Management and AmcoGiffen have come together to develop and improve processes for recovering the railway following asset failures. This has become increasingly important due to the increase in extreme weather events caused by climate change. A collaborative, open and honest process was used to implement innovative processes which allowed safe, reliable recovery of the railway in timely fashion with clear and concise communications. https://lnkd.in/ggxZvxmD UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £500K and £1M - Network Rail & BakerHicks Geohazards Assessments – Scotland’s Railway The scheme required Geohazard assessment on a huge scale and is one of the largest Geohazard Assessments in the UK to support the safe operation of the railway. This unique workstream is a new agreed process required to assess the risks from earthworks assets outside the boundary which Network Rail do not own. Unmanaged and unpredictable outside party slopes are particularly susceptible to failure during adverse/extreme weather. https://lnkd.in/gJE6kjEK https://lnkd.in/g-nX6v3V

#MassiveLandslide On April 22, 2023, a massive landslide near the under-construction Yusufeli Dam viaduct in Turkey captured worldwide attention. This wasn’t just a natural event but a wake-up call for those of us in construction, geotechnical engineering, and project management. #KeyTakeaways: ✅Continuous Risk Assessment: Dynamic sites require evolving risk evaluations. Initial slope failures can increase overall instability, as seen here. ✅Importance of Real-Time Monitoring: Early-warning tools like inclinometers help detect subtle ground shifts, allowing proactive intervention before large-scale failures. ✅Structural Reevaluation After Events: Even intact structures, such as viaduct piers, need post-event stability reassessment due to altered ground conditions. ✅Sustainability Enhances Safety: Sustainable design isn’t just green—it strengthens resilience against natural forces. Let this serve as a reminder: in construction, resilience and safety are as essential as meeting deadlines. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 📌 Credit: geoengineer.org 📌 Discover more @ Balbir Singh 🚧 #ConstructionInsights #GeotechnicalEngineering #ProjectManagement #LessonsFromTheField

📢 REGISTER NOW! North East Link SEM Ventilation Tunnel and Adit Construction technical session - October 22 - in Melbourne Event overview The construction of the North East Link (NEL) is the largest transport infrastructure project in Victorian history and includes 6.5 km tunnels from Watsonia to Bulleen. This presentation will provide an overview of the recently constructed ventilation tunnel and adits using Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The key topics include primary support types and selection criteria, construction sequence and methodology, observational ground behaviour and support optimisation on site. This presentation offers an exclusive look into the mega project, detailing the entire timeline from design to construction. It provides a unique opportunity to showcase the comparison between tunnel design considerations and field observations, with the intention to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Learning outcomes This presentation you will learn: • Regional geology and how the project classifies the rock mass for tunnel support selection. • The roles and responsibilities of the CPS team in the field and how they provide advice on “as required” support installation. • An overview of the detailed design process and how the North East Link team are bridging the gap between design and construction through design and constructability optimisations. As always, this event is COMPLETELY FREE to ATS members. One of the many benefits of becoming a member. https://lnkd.in/duQSTkAm
