I learned how to design an accessible website with Squarespace this past week... well, I hope I did. Being a small business owner can have you fulfilling multiple roles, as well as flexing any relevant skills you have to bring to it too. I'd like to think my background in the print media helped me to design a brand, website, and imagery that is easy on the eye. And, that they communicate clearly the goal for our work too. I also learnt to test my website with a screen reader this week, and wow was that an illuminating experience! I used to write interview scripts when I was a News and Current Affairs Radio Producer. Writing to speak is a different skill than writing to be read, so I dusted off those skills too. I hope I have managed to execute text that is good for readers and those using screen readers too. I’d love any feedback about the website if you have any. I’ll learn how to amend for anything I have missed. The Disability Force is a Profit for Purpose company. It is a vision I have had in my mind, heart and soul for almost a decade. Being a disabled person myself, I have to pace how I work (and live) very carefully. It's great to see dedication with the amazing people I've met working collaboratively and compassionately in the field of supporting individuals with disabilities, injuries, or illnesses. The emphasis on teamwork, shared goals, and a collective passion for providing the best care, choices and opportunities for participants is truly commendable afterall we are not here to compete. By fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment where everyone's unique skills and perspectives are valued, you can create a more effective and inclusive support system for those in need. Remember, when each team member brings their strengths to the table, encourages, supports and works together towards a common purpose and goal the outcomes for participants can be truly transformative, amazing and life changing. After experiencing complete memory loss due to a brain injury, my guest, Julie Harris, defied expectations as she found success in education and the corporate world. Today, we bond over our brain injury stories and discuss the definition of disability, how stigma impairs human performance, and how you may be hindering innovation and productivity. At our recent event, Inclusive Futures, we came away with a lot of learning from the day on the topic of lived experience, embracing diverse perspectives, and fostering inclusivity. Here are our key takeaways: 1️⃣ Knowledge is power: Our Lived Experience Facilitators emphasised the significance of diverse perspectives in learning environments. 2️⃣ Embrace Neurodiversity: Ros Brooks, our expert trainer, enlightened us on neurodiversity, showcasing how embracing neurodiverse brains can build a more inclusive society. 3️⃣ Support Disabled staff: From discussing the social model of disability to crafting wellness action plans, we explored various approaches to create an inclusive work environment. 4️⃣ Building inclusive communities: WECIL's Access and Inclusion Team (WAIT) identified barriers in employment, accommodation, transport, and leisure, sparking inspiration to cultivate inclusive communities Interested in finding out more about the event?
