A third pump storage hydroelectricity plant in Israel is undergoing test runs before full operational use. The Kochav HaYarden plant in northern Israel will have a capacity of 344mw electricity. Together with the other two already operational plants, in the Gilboa range (300mw) and Tzuk Manara (156mw), all located along the Jordan rift valley, it will supply power to the Israeli grid during peak consumption hours. These facilities consume low-cost surplus off-peak electric power from the grid, mostly during night time, in order to pump water via underground pipes from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation. During periods of high electrical demand, the stored water is released through hydroelectric turbines to produce electricity. The Kochav HaYarden facility is a joint venture of Noy Fund (60%) and Hutchison Water (40%). It includes a lower reservoir from which 2.5mn cubic metres of water will be pumped for nine hours to the upper reservoir. It is estimated that the NOI from the facility will be 230mn shekels per year for 20 years, 95% of which are guaranteed by the grid operator. https://lnkd.in/dvrKUXgk

Congratulations to Aker BP! You can also read an article about the startup of the Valhall field from our Industrial Heritage site (see the article below or use this direct link: https://lnkd.in/dXDTRCsZ).
Today we mark the production start date for the Valhall field, which has been producing since 1982. Valhall has now produced more than one billion boe, being three times more than the original estimates. The ambition is to produce an additional one billion barrels over the next 40 years. The PWP-Fenris project will further develop the Valhall field and contribute to life extension well beyond 2030. Pandion Energy AS #oneteam #pwpfenris #valhall #northsea

When is a Surprise Not a Surprise? In an article in its 21 June edition, the New Scientist bemoans the observation that: "Periods of excess electricity production are on the rise thanks to the growth of renewable energy, forcing commercial power generators to sell for negative prices. [...] but negative prices [...] can also bring a host of downsides, including disrupting the business case for building more renewables." https://lnkd.in/gghDwj4V The problem is obvious, as is the pattern of contracts, subsidies, and investment guarantees that are continuing to encourage ever more over-investment and overcommitment. Further reducing the economic value of additional investment in "renewables", as they move from niche applications to provide a larger proportion of our electricity supply The reality of increasing periods of negatively priced electricity is as good a signal as any that we have already gone too far in our attempts to build a reliable electricity supply around increasing amounts of generation from wind and solar. If suitable energy storage alternatives were economically viable, they would already be deployed. As electricity prices continue to skyrocket, perhaps eventually electricity will become so expensive that sufficient storage alternatives will become economically viable Or people will simply not be able to afford to use electricity when they would otherwise need to. The author of the article also refers to commentary from within the industry that talks about regulatory controls being imposed in order to help match supply and demand. The most obvious interpretation of this statement is that limits will be imposed on consumption amounts and patterns in order to suit suppliers, instead of suppliers having the flexibility required to satisfy the market. In some ways we are seeing this sort of perverse market response in the NSW air conditioner contracts. Consumers are being given access to cheaper air conditioners, but those air conditioners can be remotely turned off remotely by the Authorities. Guess when they are most likely to be turned off? In the winter of 2022/23, Switzerland banned the charging of EVs, during a period of intense cold, due to electricity supply shortages. Perhaps in future heart patients will be able to select cheaper health insurance coverage according to whether or not the hospital they attend must turn off life support when demand exceeds some nominal peak (with respect to Poe's Law, pease note this last point is sarcasm, in case some idiot wants to debate morals) All this serves to bring the issues relative to the choice of energy systems into better focus. I recommend reading David MacKay's "Sustainable Energy — without the hot air" (2009) https://lnkd.in/gHNZ2_Jj. Although now showing its age, this excellent analysis helps focus the mind on real issues rather than nonsense "options"

Would you like to see where your tax dollars are going? Here's a conversation I had today with Genia Smith today, of Smith's Supermarket, in Altha, FL, who was awarded a USDA REAP grant for a project talking about specific challenges for rural, small business owners in terms of energy costs, energy security, and stronger storms. Thanks again to Climatize and the USDA and the taxpayers of the United States of America. It's an honor to include Rural America in real energy resiliency. https://lnkd.in/e-WDUniz #solar #microgrid #solarplusstorage #bess #reap #usda

Almost 𝟴𝟬% of respondents believe that new 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 built in the next 10 years will be larger than 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗪. There are many factors working against successful pumped storage development, and these challenges can also vary regionally based on power markets and other factors. The industry needs to continue to advocate for changes in policies and market design that can help address these challenges.
