This week, I saw "Postcard From 🌎", an immersive experience about the wonders of our planet. The visuals were powerful, but, for a #sustainability professional, the message was sad. The Las Vegas Sphere opened in October, and is best known as a kick-ass new venue for the U2 and Grateful Dead and Co residencies. (The Eagles are up next). In between musical features, The Sphere is open to the (paying) public and, most days of the week, offers a 50-minute movie titled: "Postcard from Earth." The movie is projected onto the curved roof of The Sphere so the action unfolds around you, and the seats vibrate so it's billed as a "fully immersive visual experience." The cinematography is truly incredible! The viewer flies over stunning landscapes, hunkers down next to elephants, and generally feels overwhelmed by the stunning beauty here on our home planet. But... The premise of the movie is heartbreaking. (Spoilers follow.) The movie is titled "Postcard from Earth" because humans have left it. We saw the beauty of our planet, we marveled in its abundance, but, in our greed, we couldn't help but destroy it. And, recognizing our wrongs, we decided to leave 🚀 for a new home in space so we would do no further harm. In our absence, the Earth heals itself. A select few humans are allowed to return to Earth each year so we can remember our heritage but not impact it. And as the movie closes.... humans arrive on a new planet.... with plans to begin anew... Wow. No. * But then I have to remember: this movie wasn't made for people like me. It was made for the general public. The idea is to bring them along into a world that many of them know little about. The movie has 50 minutes to entertain and, in some small way, educate. And... I suppose it's complicated to imagine (let alone describe) a future in which we recognize our greed and... .... work hard to stop and repair the damage. * Have you seen "Postcards from Earth?" It's disheartening to witness how poor acoustics can mar the immersive experience that both filmmakers and audiences yearn for. As an Acoustics Engineer with extensive experience, I find it crucial to address this. Good acoustics are not just an add-on; they are essential to the storytelling process, ensuring that every whisper, every explosion, is heard exactly as intended. Yet, here we are, with external noise bleeding into our spaces of escapism, diluting the magic of movies. This is a call to action for the industry to prioritize acoustic design, not just for the sake of sound quality, but to preserve the sanctity of the cinematic experience. Exploring the relationship between art and technology 🤖🎨 Experimental animator Lucy Ellis has been selected as the first winner of the Rabanne Arts Factory, and showed her work last week at #ArtBaselMiamiBeach. Using found objects and scrap materials, Ellis explores themes of image compression and quality, errors in the digital frame, obsolete technology, and the contrast between technophilia and technophobia. Her practice reflects on the human connection to the moving image and often takes the form of immersive experiences. Earlier this year, Rabanne unveiled the Rabanne Arts Factory, a new program designed to inspire the next generation of digital creators while echoing the House’s heritage. As well as gaining visibility and showcasing her art on a global stage, Ellis will receive a financial reward to support her future as an artist.
