🌩️ Cloudy with a Chance of Closure: The Rise and Fall of Cloud Kitchens 🌩️ Once seen as the future of food delivery, cloud kitchens were poised to revolutionize the industry. Giants like Deliveroo, Grab, and Delivery Hero (foodpanda) led the charge, with Deliveroo's cloud kitchen at CT Hub 2 being a key player in #Singapore. However, despite initial success, Deliveroo have now shut down their cloud kitchen operations in #Singapore. So, what led to this fall? Beyond operational challenges, high marketing costs and the rise of user-generated content (UGC) have shifted the landscape. With organic content becoming a more trusted and cost-effective way for restaurants to reach customers, the old model of expensive advertising became unsustainable. #Restaurants and #consumers now lean towards authentic engagement rather than traditional marketing campaigns. When you order food from an app deployed on Kubernetes, several networking components and processes come into play. 1] Client Request - A) Initiation: The process begins when you place an order through a web or mobile app. This action generates an HTTPS request directed to the application's service endpoint. B) DNS Resolution: The domain name of the service (e.g., doordash.com, swiggy.com) is resolved via DNS to an external IP address that routes traffic to the Kubernetes cluster. 2] Ingress Controller - A)Traffic Routing: If your application uses an Ingress resource, the request first hits the Ingress controller. The Ingress controller manages external access to the services within the cluster, handling routing rules and SSL termination. B) Load Balancing: The Ingress controller may distribute incoming requests across multiple instances of your application for load balancing. 3] Service Discovery - A) Kubernetes Service: The Ingress routes the request to a Kubernetes Service that abstracts access to a set of Pods (instances of your application). This Service has a stable IP address and can be accessed using a ClusterIP, NodePort, or LoadBalancer type. B) kube-proxy: This component runs on each node and maintains network rules that allow the Service to route requests to the appropriate Pods based on their labels. 4] Pod Communication - A) Pod Selection: The Service uses selectors to determine which Pods should handle the incoming request. Each Pod is assigned its own IP address, allowing direct communication. B) Traffic Flow: Once a Pod is selected, kube-proxy modifies iptables rules to direct traffic to the Pod's IP address. The packet flows through the network bridge on the node hosting the Pod. 5] Handling the Request - A) Application Logic: The selected Pod receives the request and processes it according to the application logic (e.g., checking inventory, processing payment). B) Response Generation: After processing, the Pod generates a response (e.g., order confirmation) and sends it back through the same network path. 6] Response Flow Return Path: The response follows a similar path back - From the Pod to the Service IP via kube-proxy. - Through the Ingress controller (if applicable). - Finally, back to your client application. #kubernetes #networking #aws #cloud #googlecloud

I'd love to see exactly where my food is coming from. 🍲 Just like how I check Google Maps for the ambience of a restaurant before I go, I'd want to see the origins of my meal when ordering from a cloud kitchen. Sometimes, cloud kitchens aren't listed on Google Maps, but they look premium on Swiggy or Zomato. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could get a virtual look at their hygiene and cooking process before ordering?
