Cyber Monday became a "thing" in 2005, when it was coined by the National Retail Federation through its marketing arm, Shop.org. The idea emerged after noticing a significant increase in online shopping the Monday following Thanksgiving. This was attributed to people returning to work and taking advantage of faster internet connections to shop for holiday deals online. Retailers began promoting Cyber Monday as a counterpart to Black Friday, offering online-exclusive discounts and deals, which quickly turned it into one of the biggest online shopping days of the year. #cybermonday
