This is wild. Lifelike "Digital Human Brand Ambassadors" are coming. Meet NVIDIA's James, "A virtual assistant that can provide contextually accurate responses." NVIDIA previewed James at #SIGGRAPH2024 as an "interactive digital human that can connect with people using emotions, humor and more." Want to talk with James in real time? NVIDIA says you'll soon be able to do so ai.nvidia.com. What to talk about with him when you do get the chance? Well, he'll be able to tell you about the latest NVIDIA technologies at a minimum. Where this has applications for developers going forward is that they'll be able to leverage the NVIDIA ACE technology (a reference design for creating custom, hyperrealistic, interactive avatars like James) to use their own data to create "domain-specific avatars that can communicate relevant information to customers." I can't help but think about what this also implies for NPC characters in video games. We're getting closer to a reality where having a full conversation with AI characters in games becomes a reality, then the norm. Imagine rolling up to a random NPC in GTA and asking them about the weather, having a full on conversation about their life, or getting their views on in-game storylines. Exciting times.

LLMs are just the first volley in the competition to personalize customer care this decade. Your future audience will increasingly expect customer care that expresses empathy and communicates with a human touch and a high degree of realism. I bet that this will become a differentiator in e-commerce by 2030. If you build your business around delighting users and #inbound, then prepare to invest heavily in something more compute-heavy than transactional email and sms.
