Of course every parent hopes that their kids will come to them in a time of need or concern, but the reality is that our kids and teens may still feel shame, to the point of avoiding confiding in us. A great tip from Jesse Miller of Mediated Reality is to identify a number of safe and trusted adults that your child can go to if there is ever a situation where they are too afraid to come forward to you. Trusted adults are vital in creating a safety net for our children. If you're chosen as a trusted adult, communicate with the child's parents to ensure you're both on the same page. I love helping families find better methods for reducing screentime and conflict with their children. But did you know I also work with schools? When I speak in person (or IRL as the kids would say) at schools, I also conduct a comprehensive - always anonymous! - survery so parents can understand the issues that are commonly faced in households in their community. Every time it is an eye opening experience and opens the door to more communication because parents recognize that they aren't in this fight alone. De-Escalation & Respect in the Heat of the Moment When tensions rise, like in the situation where a teenager taunted a police officer with verbal abuse, the response can quickly escalate. In this case, the officer, overwhelmed by the heat of the moment, had to bring the teenager down and restrain him. While verbal de-escalation is crucial to prevent physical confrontations, it’s equally important to remember the role of respect and accountability. As @byronrodgers_actual wisely puts it, “It would be good if more parents taught their kids accountability at home so they didn’t have to learn it in the streets.” Discipline, respect, and accountability start at home. If you're not teaching these values, the world might just have to step in, and the lessons may not be kind. Parenting plays a vital role in shaping a child’s behavior and understanding of respect. Let’s strive to teach these fundamental lessons to build a more respectful and accountable society. 🌟 Protecting Childhood Freedom: Let Grow's Mission to Support Parents and Kids 🌟 If you saw the story about the Georgia mom arrested because her kid walked to town, you know that once in a while simply letting your child play outside or walk to the park can trigger a neglect investigation? At Let Grow, we're changing that. We believe parents have the right to give their children age-appropriate independence WITHOUT fear of legal consequences. Our Reasonable Childhood Independence laws have already been passed in 8 states, creating a safer environment for families to trust their parenting instincts. What we're fighting for: • Clear, sensible definitions of child neglect • Recognition that parents know their children best • The freedom for kids to build confidence and skills through independence Parents shouldn't live in fear. Children shouldn't be confined. Together, we can create communities that support healthy childhood development. Want to learn more or get involved? Help us bring reasonable independence laws to YOUR state! https://ow.ly/uLoX50Ugres #ParentingWithConfidence #LetGrow #ChildhoodIndependenceLaws #Georgia #BrittanyPatterson
