What is Local Culture? It’s a question I’ve been thinking about since joining Collette. At first, I thought it was just about the obvious stuff—landmarks, museums, historical sites. Simple, right? But after listening to our Tour Managers and travelers, I realised it goes much deeper. That “aha” moment hit me during Collette’s ‘Japan Past and Present’ tour, one of our small group Explorations itineraries. Our Tour Manager, Shizu Fujimoto, didn’t just take us to the famous spots. She immersed us in everyday Japanese life, and it was the small things that really stood out. Walking around Tokyo, the smell of freshly brewed coffee from small cafés filled the air. I noticed commuters passing by in the busy train stations. At the crosswalk, I heard the soft chime of the signal as we waited to cross. At the bustling fish market, the aroma of grilled scallops mingled with the sharp scent of soy sauce, and shopkeepers greeted us with ‘irrasshaimase’ as we wandered through local markets. These everyday moments made me realise local culture isn’t about museums or landmarks. It’s about how people live, eat, move, and experience life.
