The annual crush report is always a fascinating read. The breakdown of percentages of Grape Varietal crushed is my favorite bit of information. Chardonnay continues to lead the charge with the largest percent by weight owning 17.5% of the 3.67 millions tons crushed. Cabernet Sauvignon is close behind with 17.3 of the total crushed in 2023. Both of these leading varietiels saw an increase by more than 75 million tons crushed each. While Chardonnay leads the volume category, it only saw an average increase paid per ton of $41.00 vs Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon saw an increase of $186.00 paid per ton paid, on average. 22.7% of the total crushed were “other grape” varietals. ESTATE DISTILLERIES? TERROIR DRIVEN WHISKEY? Could a bottle of whiskey express the varietal grain from which it is made? How about the farm on which it grew? Most recognize that corn differs from rye or wheat based whiskeys in terms of expression, but how much might different varieties within each grain family change the end result? Could varieties grown on different farms taste different? Yields certainly vary so why not flavor? When the lion's share of whiskey sold in the United States is made from giant bins of grain labeled "VNS", or Variety Not Specified, grown and shipped to grain elevators combining multiple farms, it comes as no surprise that some with vested interests might be quick to question how much a specific grain, place or farming technique might matter to the final product. Ask a farm-distiller, however, and you will hear how in house trials show, how when all other variables remain the same, that different grains are distinct in their expression. Every day, dirt is in our professional conversation….and when it’s not, there’s something missing in vineyard and grape quality. It is still very common to have blind spots in our day to day farming practices, and as a winemaker, I like to start here; With soils….with the “dirt” (loosely)! Attached is basic review for most wine growers. For many of us, reviewing the basics is never “TMI” when; 1) Working to refine productivity and consistency in each vineyard block; 2) Transitioning from larger scale commercial farming to building higher quality focus for wine brand integrity. Here’s the 3 Questions every wine-grower should be asking IN AN OVERSUPPLY MARKET: A. Are you satisfied with the quality of your fruit but you are having a difficult time finding a buyer? B. Are you assertive in developing relationships and engaging with winemakers to understand what specifically they are looking for in quality specifics? C. Do you have a specific plan on how to transition your grapes from low-cost buyer farming to the highest quality potential or a plan to bridge between an oversupply market to a balanced market? Obviously this is a deeper topic than simply ‘engaging in a LinkedIn post’, but quality combined with relationship is now going to win the day….or at least raise the probability for success. The SUCCESS STORY ! 🌾🍺💚 "The success of Maris Otter is threefold. 1. The only barley variety ever bred for its brewing capabilities 2. Maris Otter is only grown in England – only the malt is exported 3. The variety is over 50 years old, making it unique amongst malt varieties Dr GDH Bell bred Maris Otter in Cambridge in 1965 - with the express purpose of producing a barley variety that would give consistently high quality malt for the cask conditioned ale market. It was bred by crossing the two varieties Proctor and Pioneer and it soon became the foundation of the finest English cask conditioned ales. After many years of being the most widely grown malting barley, cross pollination and use of uncertified seed bought about the decline of the variety. Maltsters find that Maris Otter is easier to malt than some modern varieties. It matures quickly after harvest, there are no dormancy problems and the thin skins absorb water easily, giving no processing difficulties. Brewers like Maris Otter malt because it is easy to handle and very ‘forgiving’ in the brew house and more importantly, is perceived to add the unique Maris Otter flavour to the beer which is much favoured over malt from modern varieties which are grown for yield and ease of production for the grower." Wine grape harvest is in full swing. My empathy to everyone working nights right now, especially those hand harvesting, it’s hard work! Here I was collecting results from a trial in Cabernet Sauvignon in Paso Robles, CA. I sprayed our biostimulant Transit at 50% bloom at 12 fl oz/acre to increase fruit set. Result: Average yield for the treated vines was 15% higher than the untreated! I verified this by comparing it to the UTC yield in another trial in the same block, and Transit at bloom was still 12.55% higher in yield. Great results, we would like to look at this application for any varieties that have difficulty with fruit set on a larger scale next year. #winegrapes #biostimulants #harvest
