EU-Mercosur Agreement – A Victory for Free Trade After 25 years of negotiation between the members of the EU and South American Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia), the free trade agreement (FTA) has finally been approved. This is a victory for free trade and a great opportunity for international business development. The  agreement represents a win-win for both the EU and Mercosur, creating opportunities for growth, business development and sustainable development on both sides. Once ratified by all future member countries one of the world's largest free trade zones with more than 700 million consumers will be created. Together, they form the fifth largest economic region in the world with an annual gross domestic product of 2.2 trillion euros. Not only major international corporations will benefit from the FTA but also SMEs on both sides. It was an honor to participate in the Philippines National Exporters Week 2024, organized by the Department of Trade and Industry, the Export Development Council (EDC), and PHILEXPORT. Our session of Maximizing the Benefits of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) at the event highlighted the untapped potential of FTAs between the Philippines and Japan, with valuable insights shared by Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo, Undersecretary Allan B. Gepty, and other key stakeholders. While FTAs offer immense opportunities, many SMEs are not fully utilizing them. Complex rules of origin and limited dissemination of critical information, such as FTA utilization rates, are some of the barriers. Addressing these gaps requires not just better awareness but also practical solutions to simplify processes for traders and exporters. Japan remains a dynamic market for Filipino products—from niche food exports to unique crafts with compelling stories. Beyond traditional areas, opportunities in digitalization and green supply chains are emerging as critical pathways for sustainable and inclusive trade between our nations. The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) has made significant steps in adhering to the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (WTO TFA). The RCEP agreement is designed to facilitate expansion of regional trade and investment, contributing to global economic growth and development.   The RCEP agreement includes provisions that align with the WTO TFA, such as customs procedures and trade facilitation. It also encourages transparency in import licensing procedures and has a clear consultation mechanism to address non-tariff barriers and dispute settlement mechanisms.   Moreover, the RCEP promotes trade transparency, which is important for a fair and predictable business environment. However, it’s important to note that monitoring the implementation of these measures requires the consistent commitment of all parties involved to make it a powerful, inclusive, and meaningful agreement for ASEAN moving forward. ## Commerce Ministry Accelerates Thai-EFTA FTA Talks: 10th Round in Geneva Bangkok, August 18, 2024 - The Thai Commerce Ministry is intensifying efforts to secure a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), holding the 10th round of negotiations in Geneva. This move is part of Thailand's broader strategy to strengthen economic ties with European nations and boost exports while attracting foreign investment. ### Enhancing Trade Relations The ongoing talks in Geneva are crucial for enhancing trade relations between Thailand and the EFTA member states, which include Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. The ministry emphasizes the importance of finalizing the agreement to create new opportunities for Thai businesses and promote economic growth. ### Boosting Exports and Investment By accelerating the FTA negotiations, the Thai government aims to increase exports and attract foreign direct investment (FDI) from EFTA countries. The agreement is expected to provide Thai exporters with preferential access to EFTA markets, while also offering incentives for EFTA companies to invest in Thailand. ### Broader Strategy for European Engagement The Thai-EFTA FTA talks are part of a broader strategy to strengthen Thailand's economic ties with European nations. The government has been actively pursuing FTAs with other European countries, such as the EU, to diversify its trade partners and reduce reliance on traditional markets. ### Commitment to Economic Growth Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to securing the Thai-EFTA FTA, stating, "We are determined to finalize this agreement as soon as possible to unlock new opportunities for Thai businesses and contribute to the country's economic growth." The 10th round of Thai-EFTA FTA negotiations in Geneva is a significant milestone in Thailand's efforts to expand its global trade network and attract foreign investment. Negotiations have been completed on the Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. It will likely be brought into force next year. Indonesia’s is the world’s fourth most populous country and Canada’s second most important Indo-Pacific trade partner. The ageeement will help foster bi-lateral trade and investment between the two countries. The announcement is just ahead of a Team Canada Trade Mission to Indonesia and the Philippines. Canada’s Trade Minister Mary Ng and Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service | Service des délégués commerciaux will lead the the Team Canada Trade Mission. The mission will showcase exporters in industry sectors ranging from agriculture-agrifood to energy and technology services.
