I am putting together a presentation titled “The Link Between Science & Commercial Strategy for Pre-IPO Pharma Success.” One of the suggested slides is on the topic of best practices early companies engage in to overcome common pitfalls in their pursuit of success. Some of the successful behaviors I listed include - 📈 Understanding how innovation will translate into market success. Great science does not guarantee commercial success. ⚠️ Factoring the technical risk of FDA approval into strategic planning. Too often, companies miss key information the FDA is communicating. 🔂 Developing key strategies early based on commercial analytics. Commercial represents a lot more than just sales and marketing. ⚙️ Having the tools and processes for considering a wide variety of strategic options and risks. All too often companies treat forecasts as number generators vs. strategy assessment tools. Speed to market is rarely a winning strategy. 🗣 Creating dialogue between commercial and clinical leads. A lack of organizational alignment is detrimental to corporate success. Now it’s your turn! Pharmaceutical Leadership Through the Years: A 20+ Year Retrospective Over the past two decades, I’ve been fortunate to witness—and contribute to—the incredible evolution of the pharmaceutical industry. When I started, the focus was largely on product innovation. Today, we’re equally focused on patient outcomes, accessibility, and leveraging digital tools to enhance care. One of the biggest shifts I’ve experienced is the rise of launch excellence. Day 0 launches, like those I led, require precision, deep insights into patient/provider needs, and agility to adapt in real time. Technology has also revolutionized our field. HIPAA-compliant platforms for symptom tracking and digital patient engagement are reshaping care—and it’s exciting to be part of this transformation. What hasn’t changed? The passion to improve patients’ lives and the collaborative spirit that drives everything we do. As I reflect on 20+ years, I’m grateful for the incredible teams and mentors who’ve shaped my career.
