How hotels can play a part in the EV revolution Installing EV chargers not only enhances the guest experience, but it can also position a hotel as a forward-thinking, environmentally friendly establishment. Three in four Americans plan to take at least one road trip this summer, according to a survey by The Vacationer. But many electric vehicle drivers are wondering if a summer road trip is even possible. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 28 million charging ports will be required to sustain the 33 million EVs that are expected to be on the road by 2030. To address this growing demand, we must rethink the typical charging infrastructure. Hotels offer an ideal solution. The Value and Opportunity for the Hospitality Industry to Host EV Chargers 💸 - Introduction - The hospitality industry stands at the brink of a transformative opportunity: embracing electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. With the rapid growth of the EV market, hotels can leverage this shift to enhance guest experience, drive additional revenue, and contribute to a sustainable future. - Overcoming Grid Challenges - The North American energy grid faces significant challenges in meeting the escalating demand for electricity, particularly with the rising adoption of EVs. American utility companies may need to invest $11.5 trillion over the next 20 years to meet electrification demands. While grid upgrades take years, installing EV chargers can be done in months. - Unlocking Level 3 EV Charging for Existing Hotel Infrastructure - The EV industry is on a fast track, with 45% of vehicles expected to be electric by 2030. However, one primary hurdle is the lack of fast-charging (level 3) infrastructure. It is forecasted that 43% of all public charging stations need to be level 3, with 86% required along transit routes and highways. - Grid Upgrades: A Significant Barrier - Hotels often lack the necessary power capacity for level 3 chargers. For instance, Comfort, Hampton, and Holiday Inns in Florida had only 12 kW of spare power but needed 150 kW for two level 3 chargers. Most commercial buildings in North America do not have the capacity for a single level 3 charger without significant utility upgrades. - Revolutionizing Hotel Charging Infrastructure - An innovative battery-backed fast charging solution offers a game-changing approach. By connecting directly to the hotel’s existing panels and storing spare power throughout the day, these systems can dispense up to 150 kW when needed, bypassing the need for costly utility upgrades. - Maximizing Revenue and Guest Appeal - Hotels have a unique opportunity to generate additional revenue by providing EV charging as an amenity. Marriott notes, "we have people that just come to the hotel and charge their vehicles... on occasion they stay if passing through." Airbnb, with over 850,000 listings with EV charging, has shown reduced vacancy levels by 3% to 12%, indicating strong market demand. - Conclusion - The hospitality industry has a pivotal role in the EV revolution. By integrating EV charging infrastructure, hotels can meet the growing needs of EV drivers, drive new revenue streams, and enhance guest loyalty. This proactive approach aligns with sustainability goals and positions hotels as forward-thinking leaders in the green energy landscape. Hotel Customer Case Study in Energy Costs Efficiency The Challenge: A UK-based hotel, situated in a historic building, was facing recurring power outages due to a weak grid infrastructure. These disruptions led to business closures, significant financial losses, and a negative impact on customer satisfaction. The Solution: Engaging Baseline Solutions, we fully assessed their standby power options, while also assessing the hotel to optimise their energy usage and look for savings from our experience through energy management solutions to improve energy efficiency, costs and minimise the impact of power outages. Key Findings: ✅Outdated Infrastructure: The hotel's existing boilers were inefficient, not cost effective in their current state and posed a potential risk to the viability of the business due to age and burner wear. ✅High Energy Costs: The hotel was experiencing high electricity costs due to inefficient practices, outdated equipment and lack of energy management solutions. ✅Vulnerability to Power Outages: The frequency of power outages and their unpredictability represented a major operational risk and negatively impacted customer experience and hotels income and reputation. Actions & Recommendations: To address these challenges, we proposed the following solutions: ✅Installation a suitably sized Standby Generator: A reliable backup power source to ensure uninterrupted operations during power outages with a 15–20-year life span. ✅Install a suitably sized Solar Installation with Battery Storage: Reduce reliance on the grid and lower electricity unit costs considerably using a fully funded Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). ✅Install Smart Room Controls: Optimising energy usage in each room through automated power, temperature and occupancy control. ✅Explore Alternative Heating Sources: Consider options like water or air heat pumps to draw off the solar and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Advantages & Benefits: By implementing these recommendations, the hotel can expect to: ✅Reduce Energy Costs: Significantly lower energy bills through increased efficiency and reduced reliance on grid power. In this case reducing their energy cost by £0.12p/kWh. ✅Energy Resilience & Improve Reliability: Mitigate the impact of power outages and ensure business continuity protecting business operations and reputation. ✅Enhance Sustainability: Reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a greener future and company image. ✅Enhance Customer Experience: Provide a more comfortable and reliable environment for guests.
