Did you know the T-test, one of the most important statistical methods, was invented by... #Guinness Brewery? 🍻In the early 20th century, the world's largest brewery faced a unique problem: ensuring quality with small sample sizes. William Sealy Gosset, a Guinness brewer, developed the T-test to solve this, allowing accurate quality control and revolutionizing statistics. Here's how the T-test came to be: 🍺 Guinness wanted consistency. Randomly sampling hops wasn't enough. They needed a reliable method to interpret data from small samples. 🧠 Gosset's innovation. He developed new distributions for small sample sizes, known today as T-distributions, crucial for determining statistical significance. Technologies play a huge role in data management and efficient practices on today’s dairies. While new technology adaptions can be challenging, utilizing new technologies and management systems can help producers enhance their bottom line. Stacy Zitelman, Vita Plus dairy nutritionist, shares a recap of the producer panel at the Vita Plus Vines and Bovines event last month. The final case study we would like to highlight this year showcases what an incredible academic can achieve, especially if they are paired with an innovative and open business partner. G's Growers is an independent producer looking to develop an intelligent simulator system to apply new data science techniques to predicting and managing variance in its key iceberg lettuce crop. 🥬 The business teamed up with Dr Ana Matrán Fernández and Dr Spyros Samothrakis from Essex’s The Institute for Analytics and Data Science, and and Dr David Clark from the School of Life Sciences to achieve this goal. Ana was fundamental to this partnership, and won this year’s award for Best Academic at our Celebration of Innovation 2024.
