A $274 million petrochemical cluster in Uzbekistan's Bukhara region, developed through the Uzbek-Iranian joint venture Petrochem Sepehr, is gearing up for a September launch. This facility, inspected by Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan representatives led by Acting Deputy Head Umid Pazilkhanov and Bukhara's new regional branch Head Shokhrukhali Sadillaev. The cluster anticipates an annual production value of $240 million, with $82 million earmarked for export. This initiative aims to substitute imported goods worth $123 million annually. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev received a detailed briefing on the project during his visit to Bukhara in May. Exploration and development company KEFI Gold and Copper PLC (AIM:KEFI, OTC:KFFLF) noted encouraging progress at its flagship Tulu Kapi Gold Project in Ethiopia and ongoing exploration in Saudi Arabia as first-half reporting highlights. The Tulu Kapi project continues to move forward, with the Early Works program benefiting from strong community support. An absence of major environmental and social issues has allowed KEFI to focus on advancing site preparations and financing discussions. Ethiopia's recent pro-development reforms, including currency changes and IPO launches, have bolstered the local investment environment, positioning KEFI to benefit from these positive shifts. In Saudi Arabia, KEFI's joint venture made core discoveries at the Jibal Qutman and Hawiah projects, with feasibility studies and expanded exploration work underway. Many financial institutions hesitate to invest in mining companies across Africa due to the significant risks involved. A few years ago, we conducted due diligence on numerous junior mining companies trading in Canada, and the findings were disheartening. Many of these firms had market capitalizations below CAD 10 million, indicating severe financial instability. The lack of confidence in these penny stock mining firms often results in scams that exploit local communities. There's a strong case for raising funds locally to support indigenous mining companies, which could create more sustainable and equitable opportunities for development in Africa.

#HistoryHasIt that the third attempt at commercial oil production in Nigeria commenced in 1936, when a joint venture between D'Arcy Exploration Corporation and Royal Dutch Shell received an exclusive license for the whole of mainland Nigeria. Exploration commenced but due to World War II, operations were suspended in 1941. After the war, Shell/D'Arcy resumed exploration in 1946, and in 1949, obtained exclusive exploration rights for Nigeria's territorial waters.   Though the joint venture had established an onshore and offshore monopoly, Shell/D’Arcy adopted the strategy of gradually reducing its concessions in the early 1950s, and focusing on locations where it had higher confidence of striking oil. Drilling of deep wells commenced in 1951 and after eighteen attempts, oil was discovered in commercial quantity and quality at Oloibiri in 1956. The COR - Cabinda Oil Refinery, located in the #Cabindaregion, is set to begin production by April 2025. ↔️ This new facility will be Angola's second refinery and is a crucial step in reducing the country's dependence on imported fuels. ↔️ Owned primarily by Gemcorp Capital Holdings (90% stake) and the Angolan national oil company Sonangol (10% stake), the refinery will have an initial capacity of 30,000 barrels per day. ↔️ It aims to supply 5% to 10% of Angola’s fuel needs, helping the country move away from costly imports that have been a financial burden. ↔️ Construction is progressing well, with two-thirds of the work already done. Key infrastructure includes a crude distillation unit and a storage terminal that can hold over 1.2 million barrels. The total investment for this phase is between $500 million and $550 million. ↔️ Currently, around 2,800 Angolan nationals are working on the construction, supporting the local economy.
